30 EUROPEAN IDENTITY. INDIVIDUAL, GROUP AND SOCIETYFor this Seminar´s working agenda, we have counted on the participationof:—EU politicians from various Community institutions, who will sharetheir opinions with us,—specialists on the proposed fields who will offer new methodologiesand approaches,—various social and educational agents (individuals, organisations,educational institutions, companies,...) experienced in Europeanissues that will contribute their experiences and examples ofgood practice,—individuals related to EDIW, the organization which is ultimatelyin charge of this Seminar and which, alongside the aforementionedorganizations, has made this Seminar possible,all the individual who have chosen to participate in this Seminar,contributing their experiences and findings.I would like to welcome you all to this gathering. Thank you foryour presence here. My thanks also go to the University of Salamancafor hosting this event. I would also like to express my gratitude to Ms.Inés María Gómez Chacón, who has directed and coordinated thisSeminar.The goals that we have set ourselves for this Seminar presupposeprevious accomplishments and realizations, based on which we wouldlike to begin our task and continue advancing. The participating groupsand individuals will prove that our work constitutes a step forward withrespect to strides taken in the past both by themselves and the realitiesof which they are an active part. Our challenge consists of accomplishinga feasible collective construction which makes the integration of diverseknowledge, sensitivities and personal styles believable, whilst maintainingtheir individual character.Let us list again the goals of this Seminar:—To closely analyse the issue of European Identity, assessing thequality of theoretical and practical information on structuralmutations and the methodological and epistemological changesthat are taking place, in order to reconsider the relationshipsbetween the following: individual, nation, group, culture (individual- group - society).—To reflect upon new teaching modes on the subject of Europe;and to offer teachers conceptual and methodological tools thatwill allow them to analyse their practice.
OPENING ADDRESS 31—To gather experiences about European Citizenship / EuropeanIdentity: to learn about their contents, their means, their resultsand the difficulties that the various proposals have encountered.—To compile a teaching guide which contributes approaches,methodologies, resources, experiences, accomplishments andproblems for European Education.—To generate information about European Education throughinteractive tools.—To identify people, groups and resource centres that deal withthis subject.—To create a network of European teachers specialised in thetransmission of relevant knowledge concerning EuropeanCitizenship / European Identity.This Seminar aims at making aspects of European Identity and itseducational perspectives operative. In order to achieve this, the outlineof the programme focuses around a basic theme: “individual – group –society”, and will be divided into two areas: Europe from aneducational viewpoint and European Identity: new challenges forschools.Amongst the numerous educational projects, systematizations andapplications related to these objectives we would like to highlightthose carried out by the groups gathered in this Seminar. For instance,we discuss the issues of citizenship, moral dimension, ethical aspectsand values in political literacy (Socrates project “Children’s Identity andCitizenship in Europe´s Thematic Network” (CICE) coordinated byLondon Metropolitan University; Research Group on InterculturalEducation from the Universidad Central of Barcelona (Spain); SocratesThematic Network “A Philosophy for Europe” coordinated by theUniversity of Urbino (Italy); PRO.DO.C.S...); different projects aboutwhat the youth thinks about their emerging identities (social,political...); the comprehension and feelings related to Europe (SocratesThematic Network CICE, University of Barcelona, Spain & University ofLuton, UK); education in democracy and human rights; theoretical andmethodological keys for curricular development (Socrates ThematicNetwork CICE; Socrates Thematic Network “Humanitarian Net”;PRO.DO.C.S.; Socrates Thematic Network “A Philosophy for Europe”;Centre for Conflict Resolution, Department of Peace Studies, BradfordUniversity, UK; Deusto University; Co-ordinating Office of DevelopmentNGOs (ONGD), Spain; Instituto de la Paz y del Conflicto, University ofGranada, Spain ...); teacher training on citizenship education (SocratesThematic Network CICE, EDIW in Belgium, Foundation Castroverde in
