OPENING ADDRESS 31—To gather experiences about <strong>European</strong> Citizenship / <strong>European</strong><strong>Identity</strong>: to learn about their contents, their means, their results<strong>and</strong> the difficulties that the various proposals have encountered.—To compile a teaching guide which contributes approaches,methodologies, resources, experiences, accomplishments <strong>and</strong>problems for <strong>European</strong> Education.—To generate information about <strong>European</strong> Education throughinteractive tools.—To identify people, groups <strong>and</strong> resource centres that deal withthis subject.—To create a network of <strong>European</strong> teachers specialised in thetransmission of relevant knowledge concerning <strong>European</strong>Citizenship / <strong>European</strong> <strong>Identity</strong>.This Seminar aims at making aspects of <strong>European</strong> <strong>Identity</strong> <strong>and</strong> itseducational perspectives operative. In order to achieve this, the outlineof the programme focuses around a basic theme: “individual – group –society”, <strong>and</strong> will be divided into two areas: Europe from aneducational viewpoint <strong>and</strong> <strong>European</strong> <strong>Identity</strong>: new challenges forschools.Amongst the numerous educational projects, systematizations <strong>and</strong>applications related to these objectives we would like to highlightthose carried out by the groups gathered in this Seminar. For instance,we discuss the issues of citizenship, moral dimension, ethical aspects<strong>and</strong> values in political literacy (Socrates project “Children’s <strong>Identity</strong> <strong>and</strong>Citizenship in Europe´s Thematic Network” (CICE) coordinated byLondon Metropolitan University; Research <strong>Group</strong> on InterculturalEducation from the Universidad Central of Barcelona (Spain); SocratesThematic Network “A Philosophy for Europe” coordinated by theUniversity of Urbino (Italy); PRO.DO.C.S...); different projects aboutwhat the youth thinks about their emerging identities (social,political...); the comprehension <strong>and</strong> feelings related to Europe (SocratesThematic Network CICE, University of Barcelona, Spain & University ofLuton, UK); education in democracy <strong>and</strong> human rights; theoretical <strong>and</strong>methodological keys for curricular development (Socrates ThematicNetwork CICE; Socrates Thematic Network “Humanitarian Net”;PRO.DO.C.S.; Socrates Thematic Network “A Philosophy for Europe”;Centre for Conflict Resolution, Department of Peace Studies, BradfordUniversity, UK; Deusto University; Co-ordinating Office of DevelopmentNGOs (ONGD), Spain; Instituto de la Paz y del Conflicto, University ofGranada, Spain ...); teacher training on citizenship education (SocratesThematic Network CICE, EDIW in Belgium, Foundation Castroverde in
