This involved the purchase of eggs from fishermen and incubationunder protected conditions. Up until March 1981, 2706 eggs had beencollected and 10A2 hatchlings had been released (Goodwin, 1981).LEGISLATIONThe Birds and Fish Protection Ordinance 1931Establishes a close season for turtles from 1 May to 30 Septemberinclusive. It is prohibited to kill, wound, take, or have inpossession, any turtle, during this time. It is prohibited to take,destroy or have in possession, any turtle or its eggs, on land at anytime. It is prohibited to take, sell or purchase turtles of less than25 lb (11.4 kg).204
