MADEIRA AND AZORESC. mydas occurs very occasionally at both the Azores <strong>and</strong> Madeira, butearlier records of there being a large fishery for this species probablyresult from a confusion with C. caretta . There is no record of C. mydasfrom the Selvagens Isl<strong>and</strong>s. E. imbricata is very rare at Madeira <strong>and</strong> theAzores, there being very few records (Brongersma, 1982). Brongersma (1968)reported earlier records (1932 <strong>and</strong> 1954) of one specimen of each species inthe fish market at Funchal; these must be seen as incidental captures.LEGISLATIONThe isl<strong>and</strong>s of the Azores, Madeira <strong>and</strong> Selvagens are Portuguese territory,<strong>and</strong> are included in the EEC. They are covered by Portugal's ratification ofCITES (11 December 1980).Decreto Lagislativo Regional No. 18/85/M. 23 August 1985. (Madeira)All capture, keeping <strong>and</strong> intentional killing of the following species isprohibited: C. caretta , E. imbricata , L. kempii , C. mydas <strong>and</strong>D. coriacea .All internal or external trade in turtles or their products isprohibited.306
