GUATEMALAEXPLOITATIONCommodity Cornelius (1981) stated that only eggs were takencommercially; there was no demand, at least at that time, for turtle skinsor meat. However, consideration was being given at that time to thedevelopment of a market for the incidental catch taken by shrimp trawlers;it is not clear if this has proceeded any further.Hunting intensity Egg harvest was described by Cornelius (1981) aslikely to be effectively at the level of "total exploitation", withintensive collection in areas where turtles were known to nest.Historical trends Cornelius (1981) notes that the level of egg harvestincreased considerably in the 1960s as improved transport routes allowed eggcollectors on the south-eastern coast access to lucrative markets in thehighland interior. In 1976 a serious attempt was apparently made to limitthe harvest of eggs; it is thought likely that these had not been successfulin the long term and that exploitation had reached the previously highlevels (Cornelius, 1981).Domestic trade In 1981 eggs could be purchased at the nesting beachesfor 50 cents (presumably US$) a dozen by coastal families or two for25 cents by tourists. GUINEAAlthough it is suspected that significant nesting by both C. mydas andE. imbricata may occur, and both species are exploited for subsistencepurposes, no detailed information is available on nest sites, numbers orforaging grounds (J.B.
