MPLAB ® ICD 3 In-Circuit Debugger User’s GuidePC HostAny PC running a supported Windows operating system.PIC MCUsPIC microcontrollers (MCUs) refers to all Microchip microcontroller families.PICSTART PlusA developmental device programmer from Microchip. Programs 8-, 14-, 28-, and 40-pinPIC microcontrollers. Must be used with MPLAB IDE software.Plug-insThe MPLAB IDE has both built-in components and plug-in modules to configure thesystem for a variety of software and hardware tools. Several plug-in tools may be foundunder the Tools menu.PodMPLAB ICD 3 system: The box that contains the emulation control circuitry for the ICEdevice on the header or target board. An ICE device can be a production device withbuilt-in ICE circuitry or a special ICE version of a production device (i.e., device-ICE).MPLAB ICD 2: The box that contains the debug control circuitry for the ICD device onthe header or target board. An ICD device can be a production device with built-in ICDcircuitry or a special ICD version of a production device (i.e., device-ICD).MPLAB ICE 2000/4000: The external debugger box that contains emulation memory,trace memory, event and cycle timers, and trace/breakpoint logic.Power-on-Reset EmulationA software randomization process that writes random values in data RAM areas tosimulate uninitialized values in RAM upon initial power application.PRO MATE IINo longer in Production. See the MPLAB PM3 device programmer.A device programmer from Microchip. Programs most PIC microcontrollers as well asmost memory and KEELOQ devices. Can be used with MPLAB IDE or stand-alone.ProfileFor MPLAB SIM simulator, a summary listing of executed stimulus by register.Program CounterThe location that contains the address of the instruction that is currently executing.Program MemoryThe memory area in a device where instructions are stored. Also, the memory in thedebugger or simulator containing the downloaded target application firmware.ProjectA project contains the files needed to build an application (source code, linker scriptfiles, etc.) along with their associations to various build tools and build options.Prototype SystemA term referring to a user's target application, or target board.PWM SignalsPulse-Width Modulation Signals. GlossaryRadixThe number base, hex, or decimal, used in specifying an address.RAMRandom Access Memory (Data Memory). Memory in which information can beaccessed in any order.Raw DataThe binary representation of code or data associated with a section.Read Only MemoryMemory hardware that allows fast access to permanently stored data but preventsaddition to or modification of the data.Real TimeWhen an in-circuit debugger or debugger is released from the halt state, the processorruns in Real-Time mode and behaves exactly as the normal chip would behave. InReal-Time mode, the real time trace buffer of an debugger is enabled and constantlycaptures all selected cycles, and all break logic is enabled. In an in-circuit debugger ordebugger, the processor executes in real time until a valid breakpoint causes a halt, oruntil the user halts the execution.In the simulator, real time simply means execution of the microcontroller instructions asfast as they can be simulated by the host CPU.Real-Time WatchA Watch window where the variables change in real-time as the application is run. Seeindividual tool documentation to determine how to set up a real-time watch. Not all toolssupport real-time watches.RecursionThe concept that a function or macro, having been defined, can call itself. Great careshould be taken when writing recursive macros; it is easy to get caught in an infiniteloop where there will be no exit from the recursion.ROMRead Only Memory (Program Memory).
