<strong>User</strong> <strong>Manual</strong> Using the defibrillator 27Indications and contraindications for useOnce the <strong>Welch</strong> <strong>Allyn</strong> <strong>AED</strong> <strong>10</strong> is connected via the defibrillation pads to the patient, theinstrument assesses the patient’s cardiac status and indicates whether the patient is acandidate for defibrillation. The <strong>Welch</strong> <strong>Allyn</strong> <strong>AED</strong> <strong>10</strong> will only administer a defibrillationpulse (shock) to a patient exhibiting a shockable cardiac rhythm. All other rhythms are nonshockableand the patient is not a candidate for defibrillation. Cardiopulmonaryresuscitation (CPR), medication, and supplemental oxygen may also be required toeffectively resuscitate a patient. This defibrillator should not be used on patients less than8 years old or under 25kg (55lbs), unless it is equipped with the accessory <strong>AED</strong> <strong>10</strong>Pediatric Energy Reducer (<strong>Welch</strong> <strong>Allyn</strong> 002173-U).Defibrillation may be effective against cardiac arrhythmias such as:• Cardiac arrest• Ventricular fibrillation• Ventricular tachycardia• Other cardiac rhythms with ventricular rates equal to or greater than 160 beatsper minute and amplitudes of at least 0.099 millivolts (mV)NoteThe <strong>Welch</strong> <strong>Allyn</strong> <strong>AED</strong> <strong>10</strong> has not been evaluated for cardioversion of atrialfibrillation.IndicationsContraindicationsPrior to using the <strong>Welch</strong> <strong>Allyn</strong> <strong>AED</strong> <strong>10</strong>, the patient should be assessed by a trainedperson. See “Trained operators” on page 26. If defibrillation with the <strong>Welch</strong> <strong>Allyn</strong> <strong>AED</strong> <strong>10</strong>is indicated, all of the following signs should be present during patient assessment:• Unconsciousness• Absence of breathing• Unresponsiveness (no signs of circulation)The <strong>Welch</strong> <strong>Allyn</strong> <strong>AED</strong> <strong>10</strong> should NOT be used if the patient exhibits any of the followingsigns:• Patient is conscious• Patient is breathing• Patient is responsive (has signs of circulation)
