<strong>User</strong> <strong>Manual</strong> Using the defibrillator 31Analyze the patient’s heart rhythmWhen the pads are properly applied and connected, the <strong>Welch</strong> <strong>Allyn</strong> <strong>AED</strong> <strong>10</strong> announcesand then automatically analyzes the patient’s heart rhythm to determine if a shock isindicated.“Analyzing heart rhythm. Do not touch the patient.”Caution Do not touch or move the patient while the <strong>Welch</strong> <strong>Allyn</strong> <strong>AED</strong> <strong>10</strong> isanalyzing the heart rhythm.Rhythm analysis takes approximately 8 to 16 seconds. During this time, any movement,including CPR and patient transport, may interrupt analysis and delay the defibrillationprompts. Text and voice prompt will alert user if patient or defibrillation pads move:“Analyzing interrupted. Motion detected.”Deliver shockThe <strong>Welch</strong> <strong>Allyn</strong> <strong>AED</strong> <strong>10</strong> will only administer a shock to a patient exhibiting a shockablecardiac rhythm. All other rhythms are determined “non-shockable” and therefore thepatient is not a candidate for defibrillation.If it is not a shockable condition, the <strong>Welch</strong> <strong>Allyn</strong> <strong>AED</strong> <strong>10</strong> alerts the user with text andvoice.“No shock advised.”If a shockable condition is detected, the <strong>Welch</strong> <strong>Allyn</strong> <strong>AED</strong> <strong>10</strong> alerts the user with text andvoice.“Shock advised.”To deliver a shock1. Make sure the Shock button next to the large number “3” is flashing. This indicatesthat the unit is properly charged.WARNING Make sure no one is touching the patient before you press the Shockbutton. Loudly announce, “Stand back! Do not touch the patient.” and lookdown the entire length of the patient to ensure there is no contact with abystander or conductive surface before pressing the Shock button.“Stand clear.”“Shock now. Press the red button now.”2. Press Shock to deliver a shock.
