62 Maintenance <strong>Welch</strong> <strong>Allyn</strong> <strong>AED</strong> <strong>10</strong> Automated External DefibrillatorMaintenance scheduleGeneralCaution Improper maintenance may cause the <strong>Welch</strong> <strong>Allyn</strong> <strong>AED</strong> <strong>10</strong> tomalfunction. Maintain the <strong>Welch</strong> <strong>Allyn</strong> <strong>AED</strong> <strong>10</strong> as described in this manual.Prepare a customized maintenance schedule for the <strong>Welch</strong> <strong>Allyn</strong> <strong>AED</strong> <strong>10</strong> to reflect howthe unit will be used. The schedule should account for how often the unit is used andwhere it is used. In addition, the schedule should consider how familiar the operators arewith the operation of the unit. Here are some guidelines for preparing a maintenanceschedule at your facility:Frequency Observe ActionAfter each useand duringeach inspectionCheck the system status indicator. Verifythat the “ready to use” status indicator onthe front of the unit is operating.Inspect exterior of <strong>Welch</strong> <strong>Allyn</strong> <strong>AED</strong> <strong>10</strong> andpad connector for any signs of damage.Make sure that all supplies andaccessories are present and in properoperating condition. Inspect thedefibrillation pad packages, and batterypacks for “install before dates” and anysigns of damage.If the system status indicator is flashing, replace thebattery. If a solid red symbol appears, turn on the <strong>AED</strong> <strong>10</strong>,if possible, and note the self-test results. If a “Self-TestFailure” is indicated, remove <strong>AED</strong> <strong>10</strong> from service andcontact <strong>Welch</strong> <strong>Allyn</strong> customer service. If the <strong>AED</strong> <strong>10</strong> willnot power on, replace the battery as it is probablydrained.Clean the <strong>Welch</strong> <strong>Allyn</strong> <strong>AED</strong> <strong>10</strong>. If damaged, remove <strong>AED</strong><strong>10</strong> from service and contact <strong>Welch</strong> <strong>Allyn</strong> customerservice.Do not use damaged or expired supplies or accessories.Replace any used supplies and accessories such asrazors, gloves, and pads.Note: The flashing low battery status indicator means that the battery is beginning to weaken andshould be replaced at the first opportunity. The <strong>AED</strong> <strong>10</strong> remains operable when the flashing low batteryis activated, and it can be used on a patient in this condition or continued in use when connected to apatient if the low battery indicator activates. Replace the battery as soon as possible.After each use Check battery Check the battery capacity shown in the system statusindicator (see “System status indicator” on page 21). If“Low Battery” is indicated, remove the battery andreplace with a new battery. Dispose of the batteryproperly according to local authority disposal standards.Always verify that a fully charged spare battery isavailable for use.Note: The flashing low battery status indicator means that the battery is beginning to weaken andshould be replaced at the first opportunity. The <strong>AED</strong> <strong>10</strong> remains operable when the flashing low batteryis activated, and it can be used on a patient in this condition or continued in use when connected to apatient if the low battery indicator activates. Replace the battery as soon as possible.Note: If the <strong>AED</strong> <strong>10</strong> is subjected to cold temperatures near or outside of its low temperature operatinglimit of 32° F (0° C), the low battery status indicator may be triggered even with a new battery. The lowbattery indicator caused by cold temperature may cease when the device is warmed. Discharging thedevice to defibrillate a patient may cause sufficient warming to eliminate the low battery indicator orcause it to be intermittent.
