There is also irony<strong>in</strong> the employment of deceit to br<strong>in</strong>g out the truth 35 . After all, it is statedclearly that Sparamizes, the eunuch of the queen mother, was not ignorantof the truth (οὐκ ἀγνοῶν τὸ ἀληθὲς: 15.5) but pretended to be so <strong>in</strong> order tomanipulate Mithridates.Before the feast Mithridates kept his account of the events to himself. It isthe false presentation of a frank <strong>and</strong> friendly fellowship typical of a symposiumthat leads him to divulge everyth<strong>in</strong>g. Mithridates seems conv<strong>in</strong>ced that <strong>in</strong>accordance with the Greek sympotic ethical code ‒ apparently <strong>in</strong>troduced bySparamizes’ allusion to the banquet ‒ his vulnerable state will not be abusedby any other participant at d<strong>in</strong>ner <strong>and</strong> that his words will not harm him later 36 .He is unable to see the plot aga<strong>in</strong>st him. Just as he missed (τοῦ … ὀφθαλμοῦμικρὸν ἥμαρτον: 15.6) Cyrus’ eye <strong>and</strong> struck him elsewhere, he cannot perceivethat his words about the pr<strong>in</strong>ce’s destruction <strong>in</strong> fact harm another person,namely, himself. The ploy is therefore successful. Mithridates is tricked <strong>in</strong>torelat<strong>in</strong>g his part <strong>in</strong> slay<strong>in</strong>g Cyrus, thus prov<strong>in</strong>g false the official version, whichhad Artaxerxes as the sole killer.But the report of the events is not the only truth revealed by the unfortunate<strong>in</strong>ebriated Persian. The true character of Mithridates is also disclosed throughw<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>and</strong> this is what Sparamizes is try<strong>in</strong>g to uncover. Mithridates showssigns of excessive philotimia. Not satisfied with the rewards given him by thek<strong>in</strong>g, he also wishes to ga<strong>in</strong> the glory of be<strong>in</strong>g Cyrus’ killer, a title officially heldby Artaxerxes. In fact, Mithridates presents himself as compet<strong>in</strong>g with thek<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> <strong>Plutarch</strong> shows this ambition <strong>in</strong> various ways. Mithridates’ arrivalat the d<strong>in</strong>ner wear<strong>in</strong>g the clothes <strong>and</strong> jewellery he received from Artaxerxes 37alludes to a previous scene <strong>in</strong> the biography, <strong>in</strong> which Tiribazus wore thek<strong>in</strong>g’s robe <strong>and</strong> necklace, although forbidden to do so 38 . The contrast madeby Mithridates between idle talk about the saddle-cloth <strong>and</strong> his own actualdeed 39 matches Artaxerxes’ dist<strong>in</strong>ction between the general liberty to speak34On the Orwellian overtones of this passage see B.
