Eran Almagorsavagery, so far concealed, has been f<strong>in</strong>ally unmasked. Another is that he hasdegenerated from a mild <strong>and</strong> philanthropos monarch to a cruel <strong>and</strong> harsh despot 75 .The banquet scene plays an important role <strong>in</strong> this uncerta<strong>in</strong>ty. For w<strong>in</strong>e itself isan ambiguous beverage. Sweet <strong>and</strong> dangerous, it reveals as much as it distorts,mak<strong>in</strong>g the real apparent <strong>and</strong> the apparent real. It discloses the truth as muchas it leads to forgetfulness, generates civilized fellowship <strong>and</strong> philanthropiabut at the same time may cause the lowest form of brutal behaviour. Onewould assume that what is needed is moderation, or f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g the right measure,which Mithridates <strong>and</strong> Artaxerxes, be<strong>in</strong>g barbarians, are clearly shown to lack.Or is it so? <strong>Plutarch</strong> does not simply adopt ethnic stereotypes. He plays onthem <strong>and</strong> exploits various familiar ethnic themes to create a complex <strong>in</strong>terplay.The difficulty of <strong>in</strong>terpret<strong>in</strong>g what is happen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> this “barbarian” symposiumreflects how disconcert<strong>in</strong>g it is when familiar features from the Greek banquetcomb<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> a new <strong>and</strong> disorient<strong>in</strong>g way. He depicts Artaxerxes as better thanother barbarians, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the m<strong>in</strong>or characters <strong>in</strong> this biography, though he argues that hisportrait reveals more negative traits. Perhaps the development of the presentation of Artaxerxes’character should also be considered <strong>in</strong> the evaluation of his personality; notice, then, should betaken of the story-l<strong>in</strong>e of this Life.75<strong>Plutarch</strong> was long seen as ascrib<strong>in</strong>g a static ethos to his heroes, thus mak<strong>in</strong>g ostensibledramatic changes, such as cruelty, to be understood as the revelation of true character traits,which were concealed for various reasons (cf. Philip’s case <strong>in</strong> Aratus, 49.1, another non-parallelLife). Nevertheless, this approach has been challenged by scholars who believe that <strong>Plutarch</strong>espoused a belief <strong>in</strong> the possibility of an altered character. See F. E. Brenk, 1977, pp. 176-81; S.Swa<strong>in</strong>, 1989. Cf. De sera, 559bc. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to this modified view, <strong>Plutarch</strong> holds that a personconfronted with great changes <strong>in</strong> circumstances, or vitiated by undeserved calamities, may losehis <strong>in</strong>ternal balance between the rational <strong>and</strong> irrational.
