Thus both the wedd<strong>in</strong>g scene <strong>and</strong> the Cleitus affair signal importanttransitions <strong>in</strong> the personality of Alex<strong>and</strong>er <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> the leadership of theMacedonians. The fight at the wedd<strong>in</strong>g marks the ascendance of Alex<strong>and</strong>erwhile at the same time reveal<strong>in</strong>g a crack <strong>in</strong> his rational foundation. The violentdisruption of the symposium, <strong>and</strong> the concomitant rejection of philosophicalideals, vividly illustrates the power of Alex<strong>and</strong>er’s θυμός <strong>and</strong> also marks thebeg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of his decl<strong>in</strong>e as k<strong>in</strong>g.
