Rodolfo LopesIn a general way, the preponderance of physical aspects as a conversationsubject establishes the QC as a piece of philosophical <strong>in</strong>vestigation by meansof encyclopaedic knowledge – a sort of πολυμάθεια 13 . On the other h<strong>and</strong>, theobservations on natural philosophy are designed to deny some common-sensebeliefs, <strong>and</strong> put forward theories based on scientific knowledge: the cause ofproblems <strong>in</strong> navigation is not the fish called remora, but the deterioration ofthe ship’s keel (Problêma 2.7); truffles are not generated by thunderbolts thatpenetrate the soil, but by the nature of the water that falls with them (Problêma4.2) 14 ; Mithridates was called Dionysus not for dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g too much w<strong>in</strong>e, butbecause he too had been hit by lightn<strong>in</strong>g when he was a child (Problêma 1.6).2.2 Philosophy as a structural force (ethics <strong>and</strong> logic)As I po<strong>in</strong>ted out before, <strong>Plutarch</strong> refers to some participants as youngsymposiasts that are philosophiz<strong>in</strong>g with them. Thus, besides discuss<strong>in</strong>gphilosophy, the organizers of the symposium also seek to <strong>in</strong>itiate the youngerparticipants <strong>in</strong>to these arts of <strong>in</strong>vestigat<strong>in</strong>g the truth of th<strong>in</strong>gs. This clearlyshows, on the one h<strong>and</strong>, the pedagogical purpose of the symposium, a matrixalso present <strong>in</strong> the Platonic conception of the symposium 15 , <strong>and</strong>, on the otherh<strong>and</strong>, a particular concern about the <strong>in</strong>tegration of those younger members <strong>in</strong>the dynamics of the symposium <strong>and</strong>, hence, <strong>in</strong> the philosophical method.However, conceiv<strong>in</strong>g that the conversations held <strong>in</strong> the QC have aphilosophical foundation <strong>and</strong> accept<strong>in</strong>g as a structural pr<strong>in</strong>ciple that thoseconversations must be with<strong>in</strong> the range of every participant raises an <strong>in</strong>evitableἀπορία. Among so many speakers with so many dist<strong>in</strong>ct characters, there willalways be some that do not share the same passion for philosophical questionsor that simply do not have the capacity to follow the <strong>in</strong>vestigations. Blend<strong>in</strong>gthese two aspects may put at stake some of the primary ethical criteria thatregulate the symposium. How does <strong>Plutarch</strong> solve this problem? The answeris quite simple. He takes advantage of the heterogeneity of the convivial set tocreate a sort of unity through difference, just like <strong>in</strong> a symphony, where many<strong>in</strong>struments coexist <strong>in</strong> perfect harmony, each one with a different sound <strong>and</strong> adifferent nature. In <strong>Plutarch</strong>’s own words, coexistence <strong>in</strong> the symposium willbe like human language, which, although it is composed of dissonant sounds –mute consonants <strong>and</strong> sonant vowels –, is natural <strong>and</strong> spontaneously harmonious(613E2-4: ὥσπερ ἄφωνα γράμματα φωνηέντων (…) οὐ παντελῶς ἀνάρθρουκαὶ συνέσεως κοινωνήσουσιν). And, so that he can fulfil that difficult task oftun<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the differences among the speakers, <strong>Plutarch</strong> proposes to elim<strong>in</strong>ateconversations of “wranglers” <strong>and</strong> “thimble-riggers” (614E2-4: ‘ἐριδαντέων’ δὲκατὰ Δημόκριτον καὶ ‘ἱμαντελικτέων’ λόγους ἀφετέον), <strong>and</strong> to prevent thegather<strong>in</strong>g from be<strong>in</strong>g carried away to a contest proper to sophists or similarto those that occur <strong>in</strong> the streets (713F2-4: ἀγῶνα σοφιστικὸν ἐκφερομένης13Apud G.
