Plato’s Symposium <strong>and</strong> <strong>Plutarch</strong>’s AlcibiadesPl a t o’s Sy m p o s i u m a n d Pl u t a r c h’s AlcibiadesTimothy E. DuffUniversity of Read<strong>in</strong>gAbstractThis paper exam<strong>in</strong>es <strong>Plutarch</strong>’s exploitation of Plato’s Symposium <strong>in</strong> chs. 4-7 of the Life ofAlcibiades. It aims to demonstrate that the Symposium is much more than a “source” for theAlcibiades. Rather the Alcibiades <strong>in</strong>vites an <strong>in</strong>tertextual read<strong>in</strong>g with the Symposium, <strong>and</strong>becomes more mean<strong>in</strong>gful when read with the Symposium <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d. In particular, knowledge ofthe Symposium reveals how <strong>Plutarch</strong> has constructed Socrates’ attitude to <strong>and</strong> relationship withAlcibiades as that of the ideal lover with his beloved.Plato’s Symposium offers perhaps the most vivid, <strong>and</strong> certa<strong>in</strong>ly the most<strong>in</strong>fluential, picture of Alcibiades to survive from classical antiquity. It is nosurprise, then, that <strong>Plutarch</strong> should <strong>in</strong> his Life of Alcibiades draw heavily onit, as well as on other Platonic texts such as the First Alcibiades <strong>and</strong> RepublicBook 6 1 . A full analysis would attempt to trace <strong>Plutarch</strong>’s use <strong>in</strong> this Lifeof all the Platonic texts; <strong>in</strong>deed it is the way the Alcibiades uses allusions tomultiple Platonic texts, together with material drawn from non-Platonicsources, especially Thucydides <strong>and</strong> the rhetorical tradition, that makes it soreward<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> so complex. But the aims of this paper are more limited. Ishall focus solely on the Symposium <strong>and</strong> shall attempt to show not only thedepth of <strong>Plutarch</strong>’s engagement with that text, especially <strong>in</strong> chs. 4-7, but alsohow the Alcibiades becomes richer <strong>and</strong> more mean<strong>in</strong>gful if it is read with theSymposium <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d 2 .The importance of Alcibiades’ relationship with Socrates <strong>and</strong> of thePlatonic texts is made clear right at the start of the Life, where, after deal<strong>in</strong>gbriefly with Alcibiades’ family, <strong>Plutarch</strong> makes the surpris<strong>in</strong>g claim thatAlcibiades’ fame was owed “<strong>in</strong> no small part” to Socrates’ k<strong>in</strong>dness to him; alittle later he cites Plato as a source for the name of Alcibiades’ tutor (1.3) 3 .In ch. 3 <strong>Plutarch</strong> mentions a sc<strong>and</strong>alous story of Alcibiades’ runn<strong>in</strong>g awayfrom Pericles’ house to one of his lovers (3.1); the k<strong>in</strong>d of precocious sexualbehaviour exhibited there might suggest to readers the story of Alcibiades’failed seduction of Socrates <strong>in</strong> Smp. 218b-219d 4 .
