Nicias <strong>and</strong> Crassusare similar <strong>in</strong> that neither spends money with the explicitly stated expectationof earn<strong>in</strong>g political support.The attitude of both men towards d<strong>in</strong>ner parties reveals their characters,<strong>and</strong> therefore for <strong>Plutarch</strong> marks a subtle yet importance po<strong>in</strong>t of divergence<strong>in</strong> the pair. Crassus appears admirable because he refra<strong>in</strong>s from offer<strong>in</strong>g lavishd<strong>in</strong>ner parties. Nicias appears excessively cautious by refus<strong>in</strong>g to d<strong>in</strong>e withothers for fear of be<strong>in</strong>g spied upon: “s<strong>in</strong>ce [Nicias] was <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ed to be wary ofpublic <strong>in</strong>formers, he would neither d<strong>in</strong>e with a fellow citizen, nor <strong>in</strong>dulge <strong>in</strong>general <strong>in</strong>terchange of views or familiar social <strong>in</strong>tercourse” (5.1) 26 . Crassus’parties contribute to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the established, albeit <strong>in</strong>direct, avenues ofpolitical discourse, <strong>in</strong> Rome 27 ; Nicias’ lack of d<strong>in</strong>ner parties do the opposite <strong>in</strong>Athens: they clos<strong>in</strong>g down, or at the very least severely limit, political discussion.As argued above, <strong>Plutarch</strong> takes Crassus’ abstemiousness as <strong>in</strong>dicative of hisother positive qualities; Nicias’ restra<strong>in</strong>t po<strong>in</strong>ts to his negative qualities, uponwhich scholars note <strong>Plutarch</strong> appears to dwell 28 . Read<strong>in</strong>g Nicias, then, servesto br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to sharper focus Crassus’ positive attributes; or, Crassus’ positiveattributes accentuate the perception of Nicias’ shortcom<strong>in</strong>gs 29 . That Niciascomes first <strong>in</strong> the pair <strong>in</strong>dicates that the latter is probably the case 30 .V.Twenty years ago the Life of Crassus was called “a particularly lightweight<strong>and</strong> anecdotal Life” 31 . While Crassus compares (very) unfavourably withthe Lives alongside which it was very likely composed, the <strong>in</strong>tricacy of hispresentation of Crassus as symposiast enables us to appreciate better thisenigmatic text. The references to Crassus as a moderate symposiast juxtaposedwith the elucidation of his career as an <strong>in</strong>effective politician <strong>and</strong> failedimperialist enables <strong>Plutarch</strong> to offer a complex portrait of his subject <strong>in</strong> ashort text. The apparent <strong>in</strong>consistency between Crassus’ moderate tastes <strong>and</strong>his avarice may have been what attracted <strong>Plutarch</strong>, <strong>and</strong> therefore by study<strong>in</strong>gthe description of Crassus’ gastronomical preferences, one comes to a betterunderst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g why <strong>Plutarch</strong> wrote Crassus.25On Crassus’ <strong>in</strong>feriority to Pompey <strong>and</strong> Caesar, which appears to be conveyed <strong>in</strong> the Livesof all three men, see J.
