Historical Fiction, Brachylogy, <strong>and</strong> <strong>Plutarch</strong>’s Banquet of the Seven Sages<strong>and</strong> Peri<strong>and</strong>er: Hdt. 1.22) <strong>and</strong> the folktale motif, also found <strong>in</strong> his work, <strong>in</strong>which a ruler first tests an advisor before ask<strong>in</strong>g more important questions(Croesus’ test<strong>in</strong>g of the Greek oracles before select<strong>in</strong>g Delphi: Hdt. 1.46-48).In addition, Amasis’ request falls <strong>in</strong>to the category of the so-called ‘riddle ofthe superlative’, which consists of ask<strong>in</strong>g “what th<strong>in</strong>g or person possesses acerta<strong>in</strong> quality to the highest degree” <strong>and</strong> seems to have been a favorite deviceemployed by monarchs <strong>in</strong> legend — the most famous example be<strong>in</strong>g Croesus’request to Solon to name the “most fortunate” man (Hdt. 1.29) 16 .Problems with PerformanceIf the letter fits well with <strong>Plutarch</strong>’s historiciz<strong>in</strong>g project by contribut<strong>in</strong>gto the archaic Herodotean atmosphere with which he imbues the Banquet, itcomes across as somewhat unusual when considered aga<strong>in</strong>st the symposiasticsett<strong>in</strong>g of the piece 17 . The symposium is traditionally a space for oral,improvisatory performance <strong>and</strong> public conversation, while a letter is written,planned, premeditated, <strong>and</strong> mute — a private communication between two<strong>in</strong>dividuals. Moreover, it would seem a priori difficult to <strong>in</strong>corporate a letter,which presupposes separation <strong>in</strong> time <strong>and</strong> space between writer <strong>and</strong> addressee,<strong>in</strong>to the literary symposium’s relatively restricted temporal <strong>and</strong> geographicalframe 18 . This tension, however, is symptomatic of a wider problem that <strong>Plutarch</strong>had to grapple with when <strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g the historically attested stories aboutthe Sages <strong>in</strong>to a symposiastic milieu. On the face of it, the Sages wouldseem to fit extremely well <strong>in</strong>to the spontaneous <strong>and</strong> face-to-face world of thesymposium, especially s<strong>in</strong>ce the well-known anecdotes <strong>and</strong> legends about theSages depict them primarily as skilled performers of oral improvisatory wisdom.As Richard Mart<strong>in</strong> has suggested, the Sages are often depicted as ‘perform<strong>in</strong>g’wisdom, that is, giv<strong>in</strong>g advice or criticism, usually about political matters, <strong>in</strong>the form of ‘public enactments’ before an audience, generally a tyrant or otherimportant man 19 . We can recall the well-known episodes <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g the Sages<strong>in</strong> the first book of Herodotus: Solon’s encounter with Croesus (1.29-33),Bias’ quip to the same ruler about shipbuild<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> horses (1.27), Chilon’sadvis<strong>in</strong>g Peisistratus’ father not to have a son (1.59) 20 . Such stories spotlightthe Sages’ fame for their ability to “shoot a brief, concise, <strong>and</strong> unforgettableremark, just like a skilled javel<strong>in</strong> thrower, that makes the person he’s speak<strong>in</strong>g16On the ‘riddles of the superlative’, see I.
