Pilar Gómez & Francesca Mestre<strong>and</strong> austerity, which will make him respectable; but as the w<strong>in</strong>e softens <strong>and</strong>smooths him, his temper will be pleasant <strong>and</strong> agreeable 54 .For all these reasons, even though <strong>Plutarch</strong> repeatedly justifies Alex<strong>and</strong>er’sconduct <strong>in</strong> the symposium – so often lack<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> restra<strong>in</strong>t – it is significant that<strong>in</strong> one of the few symposiac scenes <strong>in</strong> the Life of Alex<strong>and</strong>er <strong>in</strong> which dr<strong>in</strong>kis associated with the moment after d<strong>in</strong>ner when the conversation properbeg<strong>in</strong>s 55 (a discussion of climate <strong>and</strong> the temperature of the atmosphere), oneof the <strong>in</strong>terlocutors should be Callisthenes 56 , the k<strong>in</strong>g’s friend, but also thevictim of his wrath.As many scholars have noted 57 , the historical value of the Life of Alex<strong>and</strong>ersuffers from a clear <strong>in</strong>consistency. More than a biography, the account appearsto be dom<strong>in</strong>ated by a taste for adventure <strong>and</strong> character analysis of the hero,whose successes <strong>Plutarch</strong> is keen to portray as due not to the whims of Fortunebut to the protagonist’s efforts <strong>and</strong> character. In this biography, then, the writerattempts to defend Alex<strong>and</strong>er aga<strong>in</strong>st his detractors even to the extent ofjustify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>excusable acts – as we have highlighted <strong>in</strong> the case of the death ofCleitus or the k<strong>in</strong>g’s animadversion towards Callisthenes – although on otheroccasions his tone is openly critical 58 .The Life of Alex<strong>and</strong>er, then, describes several occasions on which Alex<strong>and</strong>erbehaves immoderately at banquets. <strong>Plutarch</strong>, however, neither criticizes himopenly nor censures him; the behaviour should not be taken perhaps as belong<strong>in</strong>gto Alex<strong>and</strong>er’s ἦθος, but to the changes that he <strong>in</strong>troduces <strong>in</strong> the Greek traditionitself. It is, <strong>in</strong> our op<strong>in</strong>ion relevant, that, <strong>in</strong> his attempt to def<strong>in</strong>e Alex<strong>and</strong>er asa k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> as the man that has hellenized the world, <strong>Plutarch</strong> chooses theframe of the banquet to show his significant ἦθος, with all the hesitations <strong>and</strong>contradictions that such an achievement <strong>in</strong>volves. Alex<strong>and</strong>er seems to be obligedto kill Cleitus but immediately after he feels regret over the loss of a friend; heimposes προσκύνησις as a sign of obeisance even if he knows that it is someth<strong>in</strong>gridiculous for a Greek; he wants to burn the Palace of Xerxes to revenge theburn<strong>in</strong>g of Athens but puts out the fire immediately. It is as if Alex<strong>and</strong>er wereforced to restra<strong>in</strong> his natural be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> order to succeed <strong>in</strong> his helleniz<strong>in</strong>g goal.54Cf.
