Access <strong>for</strong> Work on or Near High Voltage ElectricalApparatus9.8.2 Spiking <strong>of</strong> CablesA Spiking device may be used to confirm that acable is de energised.When a cable is to be spiked by a power operatedspiking device, the following measures shall betaken:• Where practical the <strong>electrical</strong> condition <strong>of</strong> theremote ends <strong>of</strong> the cable shall be confirmedas isolated and earthed.• The person in charge <strong>of</strong> the <strong>work</strong> shallpersonally select the cable to be spiked aftercareful reference to the appropriate recordsand use <strong>of</strong> cable tracers where necessary.• An approved cable spiking device shall beused by a person trained in its use and inaccordance with Organisational Procedures.Prior to spiking the operating authority shall beadvised. The operating authority shall prevent theenergising or re-energising <strong>of</strong> any cable in thevicinity <strong>of</strong> the proposed <strong>work</strong>s until advised thatspiking has been completed.Blue Book – December 2005 Page 109 <strong>of</strong> 148
