Operation <strong>of</strong> High Voltage Electrical Apparatus7.2 HIGH VOLTAGE SWITCHINGPrior to a high voltage switching operation, theavailable in<strong>for</strong>mation regarding circuit conditionsshall be taken into account and no <strong>electrical</strong>apparatus shall be operated if it is inappropriate <strong>for</strong>the duty to be per<strong>for</strong>med. After switching, correctoperation <strong>of</strong> the <strong>electrical</strong> apparatus should beconfirmed whenever possible.When high voltage <strong>electrical</strong> apparatus isoperated, the person undertaking the task shall beprotected in an approved manner from electricshock, flash or other hazards. Earthing <strong>of</strong> High Voltage Electrical Apparatus8 EARTHING OF HIGH VOLTAGEELECTRICAL APPARATUSPRINCIPLE – Earthing devices shall be appliedby an authorised person following a safe to earthconfirmation and placed to ensure the <strong>safety</strong> <strong>of</strong>the <strong>work</strong> party.8.1 GENERAL8.1.1 Only approved earthing devices shall beused and only authorised persons shall apply themafter the circuit or <strong>electrical</strong> apparatus is isolatedand after confirmation by tests, visual inspection orinquiry that the conductors are de-energised.8.1.2 In applying an earthing device, it shall beconnected to earth be<strong>for</strong>e it is applied to theconductors, and it shall be removed from theconductors be<strong>for</strong>e it is disconnected from earth.8.1.3 Wherever practicable, an earth shall beapplied and removed by an approved device.When hand application or removal is unavoidable:• All phases shall be discharged, and• Another earth shall be held in contact with theBlue Book – December 2005 Page 71 <strong>of</strong> 148
