Earthing <strong>of</strong> High Voltage Electrical ApparatusThe earth removed shall be replaced in the same,or other equally effective position, as soon aspossible.8.4 EARTHING OF OVERHEAD LINESWhere an overhead line can only be earthed usingtemporarily driven earth spikes the <strong>work</strong> planningshall consider protection from the hazards resultingfrom energisation and step and touch potentials(Refer to Clause 8.7 <strong>for</strong> priority earthing)8.5 HIGH VOLTAGE METAL-CLAD SWITCHUNITSFor metal-clad switch units and circuits connectedthereto, the method <strong>of</strong> earthing shall be speciallyconsidered by the organisation responsible <strong>for</strong> theearthing and the person in charge <strong>of</strong> the <strong>work</strong>,particularly in regard to the number and location <strong>of</strong>earths. The application <strong>of</strong> earthing devices toisolating contacts in the spouts <strong>of</strong> metal-cladswitchgear shall be supervised by an authorisedperson, unless the devices are specificallyapproved by the organisation which owns the<strong>electrical</strong> apparatus <strong>for</strong> application by one person.Page 74 <strong>of</strong> 148 Blue Book – December 2005
Earthing <strong>of</strong> High Voltage Electrical Apparatus8.6 HIGH VOLTAGE CAPACITORSTo declare high voltage capacitors safe <strong>for</strong> theissue <strong>of</strong> an <strong>electrical</strong> access permit, the neutral aswell as the actives shall be earthed and, in addition,each individual capacitor shall be dischargedbe<strong>for</strong>e it is touched. The same precautions shall betaken <strong>for</strong> <strong>work</strong> on <strong>electrical</strong> apparatus whichincorporates high voltage capacitors (e.g.capacitor voltage trans<strong>for</strong>mers, carrier couplingcapacitors).8.7 OVERHEAD LINES – PRIORITY EARTHINGSYSTEMThe choice <strong>of</strong> connection <strong>for</strong> an earthing deviceshould where practicable be made on the basis <strong>of</strong>the following order <strong>of</strong> preference:1. Permanently installed earthing system at the<strong>work</strong>site, including the neutral conductor <strong>of</strong> aCommon Multiple Earthed Neutral (CMEN)System [Not to be confused with a MultipleEarthed Neutral (MEN) System];2.
