ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The Commission would like to express its deep appreciation to those who testified
before the Commission as expert witnesses, the researchers and analysts who prepared
research papers under contract to the Commission, and others who assisted
with the Commission’s work by briefing the Commissioners on a wide array of economic
and security issues. The Commissioners are also grateful to the agencies of
the executive branch and Intelligence Community that briefed Commissioners on
key issues of importance to the U.S.-China relationship. All these efforts helped inform
the Commission’s and the public’s debates on issues vital to ongoing U.S.-
China relations.
The Commission offers its special thanks to Assistant Secretary of State Daniel
R. Russel, Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, and Assistant Secretary of
State Nisha Desai Biswal, Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, and their
staff for their outstanding support of the Commission’s fact-finding trip to Taiwan,
China, and India in June 2016. The Commission owes a deep debt of gratitude and
thanks to the following officials of the U.S. Department of State for their outstanding
assistance and support provided during the Commission’s travel to Asia,
and for their assistance in arranging the Commission’s meetings with government
officials, business representatives, academics, journalists, and other experts, which
was instrumental in the success of the Commission’s trip: Ambassador Max S. Baucus,
U.S. Embassy in Beijing, and staff, including P. Daniel O’Hara; Consul General
Raymond Greene, U.S. Consulate in Chengdu, and staff, including Kelly Busby;
Ambassador Richard R. Verma, U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, and staff, including
Thomas Edwardsen; and then Acting Consul General Deanna Abdeen, U.S. Consulate
in Mumbai, and staff, including Rishi Kapoor, Rajeev Wadhwani, and Samuel
Chernawsky. The Commission would also like to thank Director Kin W. Moy, American
Institute in Taiwan, and staff, including Andy Vo, Scott Urbom, Michael
Pignatello, and Andrew Lebkuecher, for their outstanding assistance provided during
the Commission’s delegation visit to Taiwan.
The Commissioners are especially grateful to Margaret Beresik and Erin Mulligan,
who served as copyeditors of the Report, and to Victoria McLaughlin, who
served as transcriber for the Commission’s 2016 public hearings. The Commissioners
also express their special thanks to former staff members Anthony
DeMarino, Lauren Gloudeman, and Kevin Rosier. A special thanks also to current
and former interns and fellows, who assisted the Commissioners and staff during
this Report cycle by preparing research material and background information
and providing support for the 2016 briefings and public hearings. They include
Alexander Bowe, Bartly Carfagno, and Dahlia Peterson. Finally, the Commission
expresses its thanks to the policy analyst staff for their exemplary assistance in
framing the debate and assisting in writing and editing the final Report, and to the
administrative staff for ensuring the smooth operation of the Commission.
