Limited Progress at Eighth Strategic and Economic Dialogue<br />

At the eighth and final round of the Strategic and Economic<br />

Dialogue (S&ED) talks under the Obama Administration, held in<br />

Beijing on June 6–7, 2016, participants failed to achieve any major<br />

breakthroughs on fundamental strategic and economic issues, but<br />

left with some deliverables on financial sector and environmental<br />

cooperation. (For more information on the outcomes of the strategic<br />

track of the S&ED, see Chapter 2, Section 1, “Year in Review: Security<br />

and Foreign Affairs.”) On the economic side, overcapacity topped<br />

the U.S. agenda, replacing currency valuation as the top concern.<br />
