Transmissi<strong>on</strong> in return link: 15 kbps<br />

The end-to-end transmissi<strong>on</strong> packet delay in return link is:<br />

T tx = packet_size / throughput = 120 bytes / 15000 bps = 64 ms<br />

T up = T down = sat_distance / speed = 36000 km / 300000 km/sec = 120 ms<br />

This result shows that, although the big part <strong>of</strong> transmissi<strong>on</strong> delay in the Thuraya system is due to the GEO satellite, the very low data rate causes a n<strong>on</strong>negligible<br />

delay <strong>of</strong> more than 60 ms.<br />
