The dynamics of the markets where Sonae operates and the macroeconomic context of recent years have presented our business activities with greater challenges. However, Sonae’s footprint, turnover, profitability, businesses and customers have continued to increase, with innovation as our flagship and competitive advantage lever. Innovation is at the core of who we are and we take it extremely seriously: its practice is deeply engrained in our mission and values and we continue to invest significantly in this area - over the course of the past 10 years we have cumulatively invested more than 600 million euros in Research, Development and Innovation (R&D+i) in our retail businesses, enabling us to generate hundreds of innovations that have contributed to strengthening our leadership position and supporting the international expansion of our activities. Our innovation mindset drives our people to constantly question the existing paradigms and to continually pursue new ways and solutions with remarkable spirit and genius. For this reason, in 2016, more than 7,000 employees from different retail units participated to some extent in our R&D+i effort. Furthermore, as a result of our commitment, more than 300 national and international partners have participated in open innovation network. The result of the combined dedication of our teams and our partners is reflected in this book with a selection of 75 projects improving our customer’s shopping experience, contributing to their quality of life and helping to enhance Sonae’s fingerprint as a reference company in the world retail landscape.
