<strong>and</strong> Kubera. He presides over <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Direction, <strong>and</strong> his pure l<strong>and</strong> is Glorious (Śrī). This<br />

family brings <strong>the</strong> power of abundance.<br />

Essence<br />

The Innate, as ultimate reality or Essence (Tattva), is real, pure, <strong>and</strong> erotic.<br />

Essence is Real<br />

Essence is real. The Innate is <strong>the</strong> infinite potential power of ultimate reality. Ultimate reality or<br />

Essence (Tattva) is <strong>the</strong> eternal <strong>and</strong> instructible Clear Light (Prabhāsvara) of primordial wisdom.<br />

The Yoginī Tantras teach that ultimate reality is a single primordial awareness. The Hevajra<br />

Tantra declares, “The <strong>Great</strong> Consciousness is in fact One.” This conscious oneness is comprised<br />

of an infinite field of bindus, indestructible points of light, <strong>the</strong> essence of wisdom <strong>and</strong> love that<br />

are primordially female <strong>and</strong> male. The Hevajra Tantra regards ultimate reality as an active,<br />

creative power of immense <strong>and</strong> awesome brilliance: “Wisdom is called Mo<strong>the</strong>r because She<br />

gives birth <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> universe.” It adds that ultimate reality is not a remote crea<strong>to</strong>r, but <strong>the</strong> very<br />

aliveness found in all things, “It is <strong>the</strong> great life breath <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> world pervader.”<br />

Essence is Pure<br />

Essence is pure. Among <strong>the</strong> infinite good <strong>and</strong> pure qualities of Essence are: bliss, clarity of<br />

awareness, nonthought, indestructibility, light, vital essence, <strong>and</strong> creative power.<br />

Essence is Erotic<br />

Essence is erotic. The red <strong>and</strong> white bindus are compact points of infinite erotic power, <strong>the</strong><br />

female <strong>and</strong> male essences that unite <strong>to</strong> create <strong>the</strong> worlds, saturating all things with erotic energy.<br />

Kṛiṣṇācārya praises eros as <strong>the</strong> nature of ultimate reality - “This is a characteristic of <strong>the</strong> Innate.”<br />

<strong>Great</strong> <strong>Bliss</strong><br />

The Innate is <strong>the</strong> <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Bliss</strong> (Mahāsukha), <strong>the</strong> union of ultimate bliss <strong>and</strong> worldly bliss. It is <strong>the</strong><br />

true nature of <strong>the</strong> Totality. It is called “<strong>Great</strong> <strong>Bliss</strong>” because it is greater than any worldly bliss<br />

you could ever know, <strong>and</strong> greater even than <strong>the</strong> bliss of nirvāṇa because it includes both <strong>the</strong> bliss<br />

of nirvāṇa <strong>and</strong> worldly bliss. <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Bliss</strong> is <strong>the</strong>ir final unity.<br />

The Hevajra Tantra teaches, “The <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Bliss</strong> is in essence One.” It is <strong>the</strong> unchanging, unitary<br />

bliss of ultimate reality. But is also simultaneously <strong>the</strong> worldly bliss of changing appearances,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hevajra Tantra describes this world as simultaneously pervaded by bliss. Kṛiṣṇācārya<br />

similarly adds, “This pure Innate <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Bliss</strong> pervades all phenomenal things, for it is <strong>the</strong><br />
