8. Base of Nei<strong>the</strong>r Perception nor Nonperception (Naiva Saṇjñānasanja) – From absolute<br />

nothingness, you release any sense of <strong>the</strong> act of perception, <strong>and</strong> yet a very subtle residual<br />

perception remains. You gain very deep states of equanimity <strong>and</strong> one-pointedness.<br />

The Ninth Special Supramundane Attainment - Nirodha Samāpatti<br />

9. The Cessation of Perception <strong>and</strong> Feeling (Nirodha Samāpatti) – This absorption is <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>tal<br />

cessation of consciousness. It is <strong>the</strong> highest <strong>and</strong> most refined attainment, <strong>and</strong> purifies you deeply.<br />

It is only attainable by nonreturners <strong>and</strong> arhats, not ordinary practitioners. However, it is still<br />

only a temporary meditative attainment - it cannot on its own bring liberation.<br />

Benefits: Develops profound inner peace that becomes <strong>the</strong> base for Insight Meditation.<br />

Time: 20 <strong>to</strong> 60 minutes.<br />

Reflect with deep inner focus on <strong>the</strong> laws of worldly existence. As you arrive at true<br />

underst<strong>and</strong>ing, ab<strong>and</strong>on <strong>the</strong> underlying tendencies <strong>to</strong>ward suffering within you.<br />

1. Reflect on what is unwholesome <strong>and</strong> wholesome: <strong>the</strong> Three Poisons <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lay Precepts.<br />

2. Reflect on <strong>the</strong> sustaining fac<strong>to</strong>rs of life: 1) food, 2) contact, 3) mental formations, <strong>and</strong> 4)<br />

consciousness. Underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>the</strong> sustaining fac<strong>to</strong>rs of life ends suffering.<br />

3. Reflect on <strong>the</strong> Four Noble Truths. Underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>the</strong> Four Noble Truths ends suffering.<br />

4. Reflect on old age <strong>and</strong> death. Underst<strong>and</strong>ing old age <strong>and</strong> death ends suffering.<br />

5. Reflect on birth. Underst<strong>and</strong>ing birth ends suffering.<br />

6. Reflect on worldly existence. Underst<strong>and</strong>ing worldly existence ends suffering.<br />

7. Reflect on attachment. Underst<strong>and</strong>ing attachment ends suffering.<br />

8. Reflect on desire. Underst<strong>and</strong>ing desire ends suffering.<br />

9. Reflect on sensation. Underst<strong>and</strong>ing sensation ends suffering.<br />

10. Reflect on contact. Underst<strong>and</strong>ing contact ends suffering.<br />

11. Reflect on <strong>the</strong> Six Senses. Underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>the</strong> Six Senses ends suffering.<br />

12. Reflect on name <strong>and</strong> form. Underst<strong>and</strong>ing name <strong>and</strong> form ends suffering.<br />

13. Reflect on consciousness. Underst<strong>and</strong>ing consciousness ends suffering.<br />

14. Reflect on mental formations. Underst<strong>and</strong>ing mental formations ends suffering.<br />

15. Reflect on ignorance. Underst<strong>and</strong>ing ignorance ends suffering.<br />

16. Reflect on <strong>the</strong> Three Stains (Āsavas). These are <strong>the</strong> final root causes of suffering: 1) desire<br />

for sensual pleasure, 2) desire for existence, <strong>and</strong> 3) ignorance of <strong>the</strong> Four Noble Truths.<br />

Underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>the</strong> Three Stains ends suffering.<br />

17. Deeply realizing <strong>the</strong>se truths, you are liberated.<br />
