Personal Preparation<br />

Clean your bodies, give each o<strong>the</strong>r massages, take a warm bath, don ritual clothing, <strong>and</strong> practice<br />

a few haṭha yoga poses.<br />

The Ritual<br />

1. Sit on your cushions facing each o<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>and</strong> bow <strong>to</strong> each o<strong>the</strong>r with Añjali Mudrā, <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong><br />

gesture of devotion.<br />

2. Recite <strong>the</strong> opening verse of devotion <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Buddha.<br />

nāmo tasya bhagavā<strong>to</strong> arha<strong>to</strong> sama sambuddhāya<br />

“Homage <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> blessed one, <strong>the</strong> arhat, <strong>the</strong> complete <strong>and</strong> perfect buddha.”<br />

3. Recite <strong>the</strong> Refuge Vow.<br />

buddham śaraṇam gacchāmi<br />

dharmam śaraṇam gacchāmi<br />

saṅgham śaraṇam gacchāmi<br />

“I go for refuge <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Buddha.”<br />

“I go for refuge <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dharma.”<br />

“I go for refuge <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Saṅgha.”<br />
