<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> psychic powers that may develop could be used <strong>to</strong> harm o<strong>the</strong>rs. For subtle energy yoga <strong>to</strong><br />

be effective, it must be united with a correct underst<strong>and</strong>ing of reality <strong>and</strong> love <strong>and</strong> compassion<br />

for all beings, or you will gain merely momentary blissful experiences with no transformation.<br />

Techniques<br />

“<strong>Inner</strong> Heat is performed, which binds <strong>the</strong> subtle<br />

winds, igniting <strong>the</strong> inner heat which<br />

blazes within <strong>the</strong> navel cakra.<br />

The practitioner who brings <strong>the</strong>se winds<br />

in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> empty central channel mixes <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>the</strong> Three Worlds. In that very instant,<br />

conceptions <strong>and</strong> perceptions of self <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

<strong>and</strong> similarly of earth, water, wind,<br />

fire, <strong>and</strong> space, are all not conceived.<br />

You experience bliss.”<br />

Subtle energy yoga consists of prepara<strong>to</strong>ry practices<br />

<strong>and</strong> main practices. Haṭha yoga, which is a shared<br />

Hindu <strong>and</strong> Buddhist tradition, consists of prepara<strong>to</strong>ry<br />

poses <strong>and</strong> breathing exercises that purify <strong>and</strong> prepare<br />

you. The main methods of subtle energy yoga each<br />

have <strong>the</strong> capacity <strong>to</strong> transform your subtle body<br />

greatly. In this chapter <strong>the</strong>y are presented as being<br />

performed with a visualized consort only, in<br />

preparation for <strong>the</strong> practices in Chapter 7: <strong>Sex</strong>ual<br />

Yoga. They are divided in<strong>to</strong> beginning, intermediate,<br />

<strong>and</strong> advanced practices.<br />

The Sādhana of Secret Vajravilāsinī does not directly<br />

teach any techniques for <strong>the</strong> stage of subtle energy<br />

yoga. However, since <strong>the</strong> practitioner is exhorted <strong>to</strong><br />

practice all of <strong>the</strong> Four Yogas in verse 127, it is<br />

explicit that Śabara expects his students <strong>to</strong><br />

incorporate subtle energy yoga in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> sādhana. This<br />

arrangement gives students <strong>the</strong> ability <strong>to</strong> add in <strong>the</strong><br />

subtle energy yoga practices according <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir level<br />

of development. Most likely, <strong>the</strong> main practice was<br />

<strong>Inner</strong> Heat Yoga (Caṇḍālī Yoga Jñānamudrā) for<br />

beginners, <strong>and</strong> more advanced practices could be added as students progressed. However, Śabara<br />

does teach one technique, <strong>the</strong> Swing Recitation (Dolā Japa Jñānamudrā), creating a mantra “ring<br />

of fire” between you <strong>and</strong> your consort, which is a subtle energy yoga method, but he teaches it as<br />
