Acts (Catur Karma): 1) pacifying (śānti), 2) increasing (pauṣṭi), 3) attracting (ākarṣaṇa), <strong>and</strong> 4)<br />

destroying (māraṇa). For pacifying, visualize <strong>the</strong> mantra garl<strong>and</strong> as a white pearl necklace<br />

emanating white rays of light. For increasing, see it as yellow lotus flowers emanating yellow<br />

rays of light. For attracting, as red aśoka flowers emanating red rays. For destroying, as a black<br />

iron chain emanating black rays of light. The mantra garl<strong>and</strong> moves clockwise for pacifying <strong>and</strong><br />

increasing, <strong>and</strong> counter-clockwise for attracting <strong>and</strong> destroying.<br />

Importance of Secrecy - Guhyatva<br />

Verse 128: The fourth daily conduct vow is <strong>to</strong> keep <strong>the</strong> mantras of <strong>the</strong> deity secret.<br />

The seed mantra (bīja mantra) of <strong>the</strong> deity is <strong>the</strong> five seed syllable mantra. Śabara established <strong>the</strong><br />

practice as an oral tradition, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> sādhana was <strong>the</strong>n written down sometime after he died.<br />

Secrecy was important in medieval India because people with bad intentions could use mantras<br />

like this <strong>to</strong> perform black magic. Yet <strong>the</strong> sādhana was ultimately deemed <strong>to</strong>o important not <strong>to</strong> be<br />

written down out of danger of it being lost, <strong>and</strong> was wisely saved by one of Śabara’s disciples.<br />

Mantra for Attaining a Pure Realm after Death – Buddha Kṣetra Mantra<br />

Verse 129: The Sanskrit verse does not say “<strong>to</strong> a pure realm,” but it is clearly implied.<br />

The Five Syllable Seed Mantra – Pañca Akṣara Mantra<br />

Verse 130: Vajravilāsinī’s five-syllable seed mantra (pañca akṣara mantra) is eṃ āṃ rīṃ raṃ<br />

brīṃ. It is used for extensive mantra repetition.<br />

“Adorned with a dot <strong>and</strong> crescent Moon” refers <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> shape of <strong>the</strong> seed syllables written in<br />

Sanskrit lettering that places a male dot <strong>and</strong> a female crescent Moon at <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>p of each syllable.<br />

The Dhāraṇī Mantra – Dhāraṇī Mantra<br />

Verse 131: The dhāraṇī mantra of Vajravilāsinī brings <strong>the</strong> fulfillment of all desires.<br />

Verse 132: In forming <strong>the</strong> complete dhāraṇī mantra of <strong>the</strong> devī, <strong>the</strong> main body of <strong>the</strong> mantra is<br />

given first.<br />

The dhāraṇī mantra of Vajravilāsinī is used mostly for blessing ritual objects <strong>and</strong> fire pūjās.<br />
