Tranquility Meditation – Śamathā<br />

Develop profound inner peace through <strong>the</strong> various practices of Tranquility Meditation:<br />

The Four Immeasurables – Brahma Vihāra<br />

Sit <strong>and</strong> cultivate love, compassion, joy, <strong>and</strong> equanimity <strong>to</strong>wards yourself <strong>and</strong> all beings. These<br />

qualities must be pure, without selfish motivation, <strong>and</strong> without emotional attachment <strong>to</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

Focus first on <strong>the</strong> quality of love, becoming meditatively absorbed in it. Once you have<br />

successfully developed that quality over a period of days or weeks, move on <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> next quality<br />

<strong>and</strong> do <strong>the</strong> same until you attain proficiency in each one of <strong>the</strong>m. Then begin with love again <strong>and</strong><br />

deepen your realization.<br />

1. Reflect on <strong>the</strong> danger of hate <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> value of love.<br />

2. Generate love <strong>to</strong>wards yourself. Say <strong>to</strong> yourself, “May I be happy <strong>and</strong> free from suffering.”<br />

3. Reflect on a beloved teacher, saying, “May this good person be happy <strong>and</strong> free from<br />

suffering.” With love, become meditatively absorbed in <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

4. Reflect on a dearly beloved friend, saying, “May this good person be happy <strong>and</strong> free from<br />

suffering.” With love, become meditatively absorbed in <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

5. Reflect on a person you feel neutral <strong>to</strong>ward, generating love for <strong>the</strong>m as though <strong>the</strong>y were a<br />

dear friend, saying, “May this good person be happy <strong>and</strong> free from suffering.” With love,<br />

become meditatively absorbed in <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

6. Reflect on a person you feel dislike <strong>to</strong>ward, <strong>and</strong> generate neutral feelings <strong>to</strong>ward <strong>the</strong>m. Then<br />

seek <strong>to</strong> generate love for <strong>the</strong>m, thinking, “This person, as my mo<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> past, carried me in<br />

her womb, played with me in her lap, <strong>and</strong> nourished me. And this person as my fa<strong>the</strong>r nourished<br />

me by bringing me back wealth thinking <strong>to</strong> feed his children.”<br />

7. If you still cannot generate love <strong>to</strong>ward someone you dislike, reflect on <strong>the</strong> benefits of love: 1)<br />

you sleep in comfort, 2) you wake in comfort, 3) you dream no bad dreams, 4) you are dear <strong>to</strong><br />

human beings, 5) you dear <strong>to</strong> nonhuman beings, 6) deities guard you, 7) fire, poison <strong>and</strong><br />

weapons cannot harm you, 8) your mind is easily concentrated, 9) your face is serene, 10) you<br />

die without confusion, <strong>and</strong> 11) you will be reborn in<strong>to</strong> a higher realm.<br />

8. If you still cannot generate love <strong>to</strong>wards <strong>the</strong>m, ask yourself what part of <strong>the</strong>ir Four Elements<br />

you are angry with: <strong>the</strong>ir earth element, water element, fire element, wind element? Which of<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir Six Senses are you angry with? Which of <strong>the</strong>ir Five Aggregates as you angry with? You<br />

discover <strong>the</strong>re is no one <strong>to</strong> be angry with.<br />

9. If you still have dislike <strong>to</strong>ward that person, go <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>m <strong>and</strong> give <strong>the</strong>m a gift.<br />

10. Once you develop love <strong>to</strong>ward <strong>the</strong> person you felt dislike <strong>to</strong>ward, become meditatively<br />

absorbed in <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

11. Having attained a loving meditative absorption, move through <strong>the</strong> First <strong>to</strong> Fourth<br />

Absorptions (see <strong>the</strong> Four Formless Absorptions below for instructions).<br />

12. Generate love pervading <strong>the</strong> entire world, equally <strong>to</strong> all. Think, “May all beings be free from<br />

enmity, affliction <strong>and</strong> anxiety, <strong>and</strong> live happily.”<br />

Benefits: Develops inner peace <strong>and</strong> happiness in this life <strong>and</strong> future lifetimes.<br />
