1. Vairocana – To consume meat <strong>and</strong> alcohol <strong>to</strong> destroy your pride in your own social status.<br />

2. Akṣobhya – To take <strong>the</strong> lives of beings untamable by peaceful methods.<br />

3. Amitābha – To take away <strong>the</strong> consorts of beings who lustfully crave sex.<br />

4. Ratnasambhava – To steal <strong>the</strong> possessions of beings who crave wealth <strong>and</strong> give <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

5. Amoghasiddhi – To speak lies <strong>to</strong> beings in order <strong>to</strong> benefit <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

The Fourteen Root Downfalls<br />

Committing any of <strong>the</strong> Fourteen Root Downfalls (Mūlā Patti) can destroy your progress. You<br />

vow never <strong>to</strong> break <strong>the</strong>m at any time:<br />

1. To act disrespectfully <strong>to</strong>ward <strong>the</strong> guru.<br />

2. To violate <strong>the</strong> Lay Precepts.<br />

3. To criticize vajra bro<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>and</strong> sisters.<br />

4. To give up love for beings.<br />

5. To give up <strong>the</strong> Bodhisattva Vow of attaining enlightenment for yourself <strong>and</strong> all beings.<br />

6. To criticize <strong>the</strong> teachings of <strong>the</strong> sūtras or Tantras.<br />

7. To reveal secret teachings <strong>to</strong> those who are immature.<br />

8. To mistreat your physical body.<br />

9. To doubt <strong>the</strong> teachings on ultimate reality.<br />

10. To befriend harmful persons.<br />

11. To attach obscuring thoughts <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> inconceivable reality.<br />

12. To think negative thoughts about followers of <strong>the</strong> Dharma.<br />

13. To not keep <strong>the</strong> vow of ingesting <strong>the</strong> Five Nectars.<br />

14. To criticize women, who hold <strong>the</strong> <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Bliss</strong>.<br />

The Eight Secondary Downfalls<br />

Though less serious than <strong>the</strong> root downfalls, committing any of <strong>the</strong> Eight Secondary Downfalls<br />

(Sthūlā Patti) can seriously impede your path <strong>to</strong> buddhahood:<br />

1. To rely on an unqualified consort.<br />

2. To fight or argue during a <strong>Tantric</strong> feast.<br />

3. To receive ritual offerings from an unqualified consort.<br />

4. To fail <strong>to</strong> teach <strong>Tantric</strong> knowledge <strong>to</strong> those with a sincere interest.<br />

5. To fail <strong>to</strong> answer questions on <strong>the</strong> teachings.<br />

6. To stay more than seven days with those who have contempt for <strong>the</strong> Mahāyāna.<br />

7. To falsely <strong>and</strong> arrogantly portray yourself as a realized yogi.<br />

8. To teach <strong>the</strong> Dharma <strong>to</strong> those who lack faith.<br />
