Meet the casual side of Thai cuisine at Err Bangkok
WRITER: CHIDSUPANG CHAIWIROJ PHOTOGRAPHER: SOMPOCH THUAMCHAROEN
After hearing about a new venture by Duangporn Songvisava and
Dylan Jones, two chefs from the renowned Bo.Lan restaurant, we
headed to a soi without a name at Tha Tien for a glimpse of the
highly anticipated Err restaurant.
Err is not a carbon copy of the previous Bo.Lan. Instead of
serving rare dishes in a fine dining manner, the restaurant explores
the more casual side of Thai cuisine.
“Err is a Thai word used with close friends. It’s an informal term
that conveys a sense of casualness,” explained Duangporn. That is
why the food at Err is mainly Thai snacks, street food and homemade
fermented dishes along with several curry menus that you
can pair with rice if you are afraid that snacks won’t fill you up.
But if street food is everywhere in Thailand, why bother? The
answer lies in the attention to quality and dedication of the chefs in
presenting a purer taste of everyday menus without processed
ingredients. “Thai street food is full of MSG, but we eat it everyday. For
foreigners, Thai street food is to-die-for. It’s sad that they cannot
experience the true taste of it because of MSG and all the seasoning
sauces. I don’t believe this is the way it should be. If things continue
like this, traditions will disappear.” Err wants to bring the essence of
street food back on track by using quality local produce from farmers
and, of course, all dishes are without MSG and packaged sauces. This
rustic Thai concept is also reflected through colourful contemporary
decor and nostalgic games. Relive your childhood with classic Thai
games like ‘Fish Prawn Crab Dice’ and ‘Spin the Egg’. Who knows, you
might get special discounts! “It’s the kind of thing you wouldn’t know
if you were not Thai, it’s a nice way to share the culture and have fun
too,” concluded Duangporn with a smile. (errbkk.com)
