Breast cancer, if discovered in the early stages has a 90%
chance of being treated. If discovered in a later stage, the
patient can lead a normal life while monitoring the cancer
closely in case it relapses. The most important thing for the
patient is to continuously follow the doctor’s orders and to
stay strong both physically and mentally.
The process takes eight months to several years
according to the cancer’s stage and aggressiveness. The
patient must strictly follow the doctor’s treatment plan.
Their diet should be rich and suffi cient during chemotherapy
so that the body is able to heal itself. It’s advisable to have
freshly made, clean meals. Fermented and raw foods are
prohibited during chemotherapy due to possible bacteria
content. Suffi cient sleep and light exercise will also be
benefi cial. Stopping the treatment abruptly is not
recommended because cancer needs consecutive
treatment. Just as in war, discipline is necessary for victory.
The side effects are only temporary. After the treatments,
the patient will regain strength. Side effects such as balding,
dried lips, bone aches, vomiting, and fatigue should all
begin to dissipate. Also, someone close to the patient must
understand these points. You have to encourage the patient
to stay focused in order to combat the cancer. If the patient
is too weak from not enough nutrition or lack of sleep,
treatments will be less effective.
During this time, cancer patients may look malnourished
and tired. As a patient, you need patience to follow the
course and to stay focused on the treatment. The good
news is that today, breast cancer sufferers have a 90%
chance of survival without the cancer returning. With more
understanding and awareness, we can help to raise that
percentage higher.
PINK RIBBON
Pink Ribbon
Susan G. Komen
Since 1991, the Pink Ribbon was used as the
international symbol for breast cancer awareness. The
Susan G. Komen Foundation distributed these ribbons to
cancer survivors for the fi rst time that year. It is believed
that the ribbon was derived from the Red Ribbon
Campaign for HIV infected patients and a change in
colour represented the courage of women.
