¤รั้นถึงชวงออกพรรษาของทุกป จังหวัดหนองคายอันเงียบสงบ
ก็เริ่มคึกคักไปดวยผูคนที่ตางมุงหนามาจับจองพื้นที่เพื่อรับชม
ปรากฏการณแหงป นั่นก็คือปรากฏการณบั้งไฟพญานาคเหนือลุม
แมน้ําโขงที่อยูในรูปของลูกไฟขนาดใหญที่ลอยขึ้นมาเหนือพื้นน้ํา ณ จังหวัด
หนองคาย โดยมีจํานวนตั้งแตหลายสิบลูกไปจนถึงหลายพันลูกเลยทีเดียว
แมปจจุบันนี้วิทยาการจะกาวหนาไปมากเพียงใด นักวิจัยก็ยังไมสามารถ
พิสูจนไดวาบั้งไฟพญานาคนี้เปนปรากฏการณธรรมชาติ เหนือธรรมชาติ
หรือเปนปรากฏการณที่เกิดจากฝมือมนุษยกันแน แตสิ่งหนึ่งที่แนนอนคือ
บั้งไฟพญานาคนี้ไดถูกเชื่อมโยงกับพระพุทธศาสนามาชานานเนื่องจากมัก
เกิดตรงกับชวงออกพรรษาของทุกป โดยตํานานทางพระพุทธศาสนาเลาวา
แมน้ําโขงนั้นเปนที่อยูของพญานาคแหงเมืองบาดาล ซึ่งแตเดิมนั้นพญานาค
มีนิสัยดุรายมาก แตพอพระพุทธเจาไดเสด็จมาโปรดสัตวก็เกิดความเลื่อมใส
ในพระพุทธศาสนา พญานาคจึงเลิกนิสัยดุรายและอยากออกบวช แต
เนื่องจากเปนสัตว จึงไมสามารถออกบวชไดอยางเชนมนุษยทั่วไป เมื่อ
พระพุทธเจาเสด็จลงสูโลกมนุษยดวยบันไดแกว หลังจากโปรดพระมารดา
ที่สวรรคชั้นดาวดึงสในวันขึ้น 15 ค่ําเดือน 11 หรือวันออกพรรษาของทุกป
มนุษยโลกจะทําบุญตักบาตรและนําดอกไมธูปเทียนถวายเปนพุทธบูชา
เมื่อพญานาคแหงเมืองบาดาลรูเรื่องนี้จึงไดจัดทําบั้งไฟพญานาคขึ้นเพื่อ
เปนการฉลองที่พระพุทธเจาเสด็จลงสูโลกมนุษยอีกครั้ง
นอกจากนี้ ความเชื่อเกี่ยวกับบั้งไฟพญานาคนาจะเชื่อมโยงกับตํานาน
ทองถิ่นเรื่องการเกิดแมน้ําโขงดวยเชนกัน โดยคนทองถิ่นเชื่อกันวาในสมัย
โบราณนั้น บริเวณภาคอีสานของไทยนั้นเคยเปนเมืองพญานาคมากอน
แตอยูมาวันหนึ่ง พญานาคสองตัว ไดแกพญาศรีสุทโธนาคและพญาสุวรรณ
นาคที่เคยเปนเพื่อนรักกันกลับผิดใจกันและทารบกัน การสูรบดําเนินไป
จนถึง 7 ปก็ยังไมไดผูชนะ จนเดือดรอนกันไปทั่วทั้งโลกสวรรค มนุษย และ
บาดาล พญาแถนเห็นทาไมดีจึงลงมาหามทัพโดยขอใหพญานาคทั้งสอง
แขงกันสรางแมน้ําดีกวา ใครสรางแมน้ําไปถึงทะเลกอนถือวาเปนผูชนะ และ
พญาแถนจะมอบปลาบึกใหเปนรางวัลดวย พญาศรีสุทโธนาคผูมีอารมณ
มุทะลุดุดันไดสรางแมน้ําไปทางทิศตะวันออกอยางรีบรอน ไมพิถีพิถัน
แมน้ําจึงคดเคี้ยวเลี้ยวไปมาตามแนวภูเขาจึงเรียกชื่อวา ‘แมน้ําโคง’ ตอมา
เพื้ยนเปนแมน้ําโขง สวนพญาสุวรรณนาคผูใจเย็นสุขุมลุมลึก พาไพรพล
สรางแมน้ํามุงไปยังทิศใต โดยตั้งใจสรางอยางพิถีพิถันเปนเสนตรง เพื่อยน
ระยะทางในการสราง แมน้ําสายนี้จึงเรียกชื่อวา ‘แมน้ํานาน’ ผลของการ
สรางแมน้ําแขงกันในครั้งนี้ ปรากฎวาพญาศรีสุทโธนาคเปนฝายชนะ
พญาแถนจึงปลอยปลาบึกซึ่งเปนปลาน้ําจืดขนาดใหญที่สุดลงในแมน้ําโขง
และเปนแมน้ําสายเดียวเทานั้นที่มีปลาบึกอาศัยอยูจนทุกวันนี้
After Buddhist lent every year, the quiet province of
Nong Khai begins to buzz with activity. People from far and
wide come to witness the Naga Fireballs, an amazing spectacle
of glowing light that fl oats over the Mekong River. This
phenomenon sometimes appears by the dozens or even by
the thousands each year.
Even with the advances in modern science, researchers have
never been able to determine if the Naga Fireballs are a true
natural occurance, a supernatural phenomenon, or a manmade
event. One thing is certain, since they seem to appear every
year at the end of Buddhist Lent, the legend of the Naga
Fireballs have long been intertwined with the Thai-Buddhist
religion. Buddhist legend has it that the Mekong river is home
to the Serpent of the Underworld. Originally this serpent was
known to be very fi erce, but as Buddha became enlightened,
the Naga also changed.
It is said that the Naga wished to be ordained, though it
could not become a monk like normal men it still followed the
Buddha. When the Buddha returned from the heavens after
preaching Abhidharma to his mother, and descended back
down to earth on a mystical staircase on the 15th day of the
11th month, a great celebration was held. People uphold this
occasion by offering fl owers and candles, but the Naga marks
this special event by producing fi reballs.
Beliefs about the Naga Fireballs are also linked to myths
about the river itself. The locals believe that this area of Isaan
was once a city of Nagas. One day, two of the serpents named
Phraya Sri Sutonak and Phraya Suwanak who were once the
best of friends began to taunt and battle one another. The
fi ghting lasted seven years without a clear victor. This caused
suffering throughout the heavens, earth and seas. To solve this,
Phraya Than (a good natured spiritual being) tried to stop the
quarrel by asking both serpents to compete in creating rivers.
Whosoever reaches the sea fi rst with their river will be deemed
the winner. As an added reward, Pharya Than would also offer
a delicious catfi sh to the winner. Phraya Sri Sutonak was known
as being reckless and aggressive, therefore he dug his river in
a hurry towards the east. Without a plan this river meandered
along the mountains and was therefore called ‘Maenam Koung’
or ‘Bended River’, which subsequently became today’s ‘Maenam
Kong’ or ‘Mekong River’. Phraya Suwanak on the other hand
was calm and patient, digging his river towards the south.
This straight and well planned river became the ‘Maenam
Naan’. In the end, it was the fast pace of Phraya Sri Sutonak
and the Mekong that won. Phraya Than congratulated him by
releasing catfi sh into the river. To this day, the Mekong is the
only river in the world with this species of giant catfi sh.
From the past to the present there have been numerous
scientifi c hypothesis about the origins of the Naga Fireballs
phenomenon. One of the most popular theories is that the
fi reballs are formed by colourless and odorless gases generated
