แห่งอาณาจักรล้านนา<br />
The Capital of the Lanna Kingdom<br />
นครเชียงใหม่หรือ ‘เมืองใหม่’ อดีตเมืองหลวงอันงดงามของ<br />
อาณาจักรล้านนานี้ก่อตั้งขึ้นในวันที่ 12 เมษายน พ.ศ. 1839<br />
โดยการก่อตั้งเมืองนั้นถือเป็นการเริ่มต้นยุคสมัยของอาณาจักร<br />
ล้านนา อาณาจักรอันแสนเฟื่องฟูในอดีต ที่เต็มไปด้วยความงามสุด<br />
โรแมนติก ยุคล้านนานี้ครอบคลุมระยะเวลาเกือบห้าร้อยปี และนับ<br />
เป็นยุคสำาคัญที่ยังคงทิ้งร่องรอยไว้ให้เห็นจนถึงทุกวันนี้<br />
หากมองเผินๆ เชียงใหม่อาจไม่ต่างอะไรจากเมืองต่างจังหวัดอื่นๆ<br />
ของประเทศไทย ถนนอันคลาคล่ำาพาชาวท้องถิ่นในรถบรรทุกและ<br />
รถเก๋งเคลื่อนที่ผ่านเหล่าอาคารสีฟ้าอมเทาที่มีสีเขียวมรกตแทรก<br />
เป็นหย่อมๆ แต่เมื่อเข้าสู่ ‘เมือง’ หรือย่านเมืองเก่าซึ่งตั้งอยู่ในพื้นที่<br />
ทรงสี่เหลี่ยมจัตุรัสที่ล้อมรอบด้วยกำาแพงอิฐสีแดงอันเป็นเอกลักษณ์<br />
ซึ่งอยู่ภายในคูน้ำาที่ขุดขึ้นอีกชั้นหนึ่ง บรรยากาศก็เริ่มเปลี่ยนไป และ<br />
เรื่องราวของประวัติศาสตร์ชวนฝันก็เริ่มปรากฏขึ้นมาในความคิด<br />
และแม้จะมีร้านกาแฟและบาร์พร้อมป้ายตัวอักษรภาษาอังกฤษและ<br />
จีนผุดขึ้นมามากขึ้นเท่าไหร่ แต่สิ่งก่อสร้างที่เป็นตัวแทนของยุคใหม่<br />
เหล่านี้ก็ไม่สามารถอำาพรางเสน่ห์ของตรอกซอกซอยอันซับซ้อน ผนัง<br />
ขรุขระ และร่องรอยของอาณาจักรล้านนาที่ซ่อนอยู่ทุกซอกทุกมุม<br />
แม้จะล่วงเลยมาถึงเดือนกันยายนแล้ว แต่อากาศที่เชียงใหม่ยัง<br />
คงร้อนอ้าว พ่อค้าแม่ค้าเอาพัดลมมาตั้งเป่าคลายร้อนระหว่างที่ดูรถ<br />
ราแล่นผ่านไปมา ในขณะที่นักท่องเที่ยวที่เคยชินกับอากาศที่เย็น<br />
กว่านี้นั่งหลบแดดและตากไอน้ำาอยู่ในร้านกาแฟ กาแฟที่เชียงใหม่<br />
รสชาติดีทีเดียว และที่นี่ก็ไม่เคยขาดแคลนขนมหวานเลย คนชอบ<br />
ทานขนมต้องชอบแน่ๆ<br />
Chiang Mai, or ‘New City’, dazzling former capital of the<br />
Lanna Kingdom, was founded on April 12, 1296. It<br />
effectively marked the beginning of the Lanna period, a<br />
lustrous, nostalgic and uniquely romantic bygone era that<br />
would last nearly five hundred years—a historic period<br />
whose presence is still widely felt today.<br />
At first glance, Chiang Mai is a provincial city like any other<br />
in Thailand. Busy roads guide locals in trucks and sedans<br />
across blue-grey urban landscapes dotted by emerald green.<br />
But once entering the ‘Mueng’, or the old city—a planar<br />
square surrounded by iconic brick-red walls inside of a man<br />
made moat—the atmosphere begins to shift. There is an<br />
unspeakable sense of historical reverie. Not even the<br />
plethora of newly opened coffee shops and modern bars<br />
sporting English and Chinese characters can hope to mask<br />
the tiny winding streets, uneven walls and unobtrusive<br />
remnants of old Lanna peering from every visible corner.<br />
In the day, even in September, the city was hot.<br />
Shopkeepers put up standing fans and watch cars pass by<br />
while tourists used to cooler weather sit in shaded cafés<br />
basking under mists of water vapour from ‘cooling<br />
machines’. The coffee is good here, and there is no shortage<br />
of Northern Thai desserts for those with a sweet tooth.<br />
