ว่ากันว่าชื่อของมาเก๊านั้นมีที่มาจากวัดอาม่า
(A-Ma Temple) หรือวัดมาก๊อก (Ma Kok Temple)
ซึ่งเป็นสถานที่ศักดิ์สิทธิ์ที่ชาวประมงสร้างขึ้นเพื่อบูชา
Matzu หรือเทพีผู้คุ้มภัยให้นักเดินเรือ ตามตำานาน
ท้องถิ่นนั้นเทพีองค์นี้ได้อวตารลงมาเป็นสาวงามที่ช่วย
ชีวิตชาวเรือที่เจอพายุ เมื่อเสร็จภารกิจ เธอก็เดินขึ้นฝั่ง
แล้วเหินขึ้นสวรรค์ไป ชาวบ้านจึงสร้างวัดขึ้นตรงจุดที่
เธอขึ้นฝั่งนั่นเอง เมื่อชาวโปรตุเกสเดินทางมาถึง
มาเก๊าเป็นครั้งแรก คนเรือก็ได้ถามชาวบ้านว่าพื้นที่ ณ
จุดนั้นเรียกว่าอะไร ซึ่งชาวบ้านได้ตอบกลับไปว่ามาก๊อก
โปรตุเกสจึงเรียกบริเวณนั้นว่ามาเก๊าในเวลาต่อมา
แต่เดิมนั้นมาเก๊ามีชื่อภาษาอังกฤษว่า Macao ซึ่ง
เป็นการสะกดแบบโปรตุเกส แต่ได้เปลี่ยนมาเป็น
Macau หลังจากที่จีนได้รับดินแดนคืนจากโปรตุเกส
‘Macau’ likely derived from the famous A-Ma
or Ma Kok Temple that local fishermen built
for Matzu, the goddess of seafarers. Legends
say that the goddess disguised herself as a
young woman to help a group of fishermen
from a storm. After the incident, she
returned to shore and ascended to heaven.
Locals then built a temple on the spot where
she rose to the sky. When the Portuguese
first came to Macau and asked about the
name of the place, the locals replied with
something like “Maa Kok” so they called
the town Macau. Macao, which is the
Portuguese spelling, was changed to Macau
after Portugal returned the land to China.

ประชากรอยู่ถึง 20,497 คน แต่แม้กระนั้น มาเก๊าก็เป็น
ดินแดนที่มีประชากรอายุยืนมากที่สุดแห่งหนึ่งของโลก และ
ยังมีอัตราการเสียชีวิตในทารกที่ต่ำ าที่สุดแห่งหนึ่งของโลกด้วย

20,497 people per square kilometer. Despite
its population density, Macau has one of the
highest life expectancy and lowest infant
mortality rates in the world.
