GLOBAL CRISIS INTERVENTION: A COMMISSION OF THE WORLD FEDERATION OF<br />
MUSIC THERAPY<br />
DESCRIPTION:<br />
As a Commission of the World Federation of <strong>Music</strong> Therapy (WFMT), <strong>Global</strong> Crisis Intervention aims to<br />
enhance the well-being of individuals around the world by supporting and acknowledging the ef<strong>for</strong>ts of<br />
music therapy work in all are<strong>as</strong> of global crises. There are numerous social and environmental issues<br />
deeply affecting the quality of life internationally such <strong>as</strong> hunger, poverty, war, genocide, and natural<br />
dis<strong>as</strong>ters. The aim of this Commission is to recognize and support the many music therapists around the<br />
world committed to addressing these issues. This Commission also aims to develop strategic plans and<br />
specific educational resources <strong>for</strong> <strong>Music</strong> Therapists interested in serving individuals experiencing traum<strong>as</strong><br />
and losses <strong>as</strong> a result of natural dis<strong>as</strong>ters. A <strong>Global</strong> Crisis Intervention Column now serves <strong>as</strong> an<br />
international <strong>for</strong>um <strong>for</strong> individuals to share reports of work in which they are involved.<br />
The World Federation of <strong>Music</strong> Therapy (WFMT) is an international organization bringing together<br />
music therapy <strong>as</strong>sociations and individuals interested and active in developing and promoting music<br />
therapy globally through professional exchange, collaboration, and action. WFMT is an international<br />
body, with officers, commissioners, and regional liaisons in Africa, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada,<br />
China, Finland, India, Ireland, Korea, Spain, U.A.E., and the USA.<br />
CURRENT STATUS:<br />
The Commission‟s ongoing goals include:<br />
To organize an ongoing source of in<strong>for</strong>mation and a network of interested music therapists<br />
To <strong>for</strong>mulate an ongoing record and datab<strong>as</strong>e of music therapists who are interested/available to<br />
offer brief services to those experiencing traum<strong>as</strong> and dis<strong>as</strong>ters<br />
To identify qualified and well trained music therapists in key regions around the world who can<br />
help guide and facilitate the disbursement of supportive services to the individuals and families in<br />
need during these crises<br />
To develop a Training Program and Manual to help educate and in<strong>for</strong>m those music therapists<br />
serving crises<br />
To organize a means of electronic communication that is e<strong>as</strong>ily accessible to music therapists<br />
around the world<br />
Between 2010-2011 this Commission w<strong>as</strong> active in these ways:<br />
Offered ongoing support to people affected by dis<strong>as</strong>ters, i.e. in New Zealand, Australia, Chile,<br />
Japan, North Africa and the Middle E<strong>as</strong>t. <strong>Resource</strong>s and frequent communications were offered<br />
during and post crises in those regions<br />
Columns were posted on WFMT website highlighting work that music therapists were conducting<br />
with survivors of crises<br />
RESEARCH AND EVALUATION:<br />
The Commission h<strong>as</strong> compiled an Introductory Training Manual that includes helpful strategies to<br />
consider when working in dis<strong>as</strong>ters <strong>as</strong> well <strong>as</strong> documents pertaining to lived experiences with advice from<br />
music therapists who have served post crises. This Manual will continue to be updated.<br />
