Therefore, <strong>the</strong> persecutions proved who were <strong>the</strong> real Christians; persecution was<br />

virtually an im prim atur <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> Donatist Church was <strong>the</strong> true and correct<br />

body of Christ on earth.<br />

The place and moment when <strong>the</strong> persecution occurred was <strong>the</strong>refore of prime<br />

importance, s<strong>in</strong>ce that event <strong>in</strong>dicated <strong>the</strong> moment when <strong>the</strong> Donatist position was<br />

v<strong>in</strong>dicated. Hence it was preserved <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>scriptions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> very church <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong><br />

v<strong>in</strong>dication had taken place. The speaker of <strong>the</strong> Passio drew his congregation’s<br />

attention to <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong>scriptions and noted <strong>the</strong> location and <strong>the</strong> time: “It is this very<br />

basilica, I say, between whose walls so many bodies were cut down and buried. Here,<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>scriptions, memory preserves <strong>the</strong> name of <strong>the</strong> persecution as Caecilianist until<br />

<strong>the</strong> end of time.” 130 The presence of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>scriptions <strong>in</strong>dicates that for <strong>the</strong> Donatists<br />

<strong>the</strong> benefits of martyrdoms were not to be recalled merely once a year on <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

anniversary, 131 but were a constant presence <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> church; a daily rem<strong>in</strong>der to<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves of what <strong>the</strong>ir co-religionists had achieved and of when <strong>the</strong>ir Church had<br />

fulfilled <strong>the</strong> scriptural criteria determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g which was <strong>the</strong> true Church.<br />

Just as <strong>the</strong>re is someth<strong>in</strong>g of a hiatus between <strong>the</strong> reasons for <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong><br />

of that persecution <strong>in</strong> 321. It has been expla<strong>in</strong>ed due to <strong>the</strong> need for Constant<strong>in</strong>e to<br />

concentrate on <strong>the</strong> impend<strong>in</strong>g war with Lic<strong>in</strong>ius, 132 but at <strong>the</strong> same time, Constant<strong>in</strong>e<br />

had previously <strong>in</strong>dicated that he regarded correct religious worship to be <strong>in</strong>tegral to<br />
