illustrated in Mary Davis Gillies’s All About <strong>Modern</strong> Decorating, 1942.<br />

San Francisco showroom, which contained a number of Mies van der<br />

Rohe’s Barcelona chairs positioned on a textured carpet around a glasstopped<br />

coffee table, provided a model for countless <strong>Modern</strong>ist domestic<br />

interiors and commercial reception areas in ‘architect-designed’ interior<br />

spaces for years to come. An illustration in the 1967 book Forme et colore<br />

dell’arredamento moderno depicted a highly stylish combination living/<br />

dining room which combined Barcelona chairs with a pedestal table and<br />

chairs designed by Eero Saarinen, also manufactured by Knoll.<br />

Caricaturing the language of the modern interior style some years<br />

earlier in <strong>Interior</strong>s magazine George Nelson had described it as compris-
