who became best known for the <strong>Modern</strong>ist interiors she created for her<br />

own home, E1027, in Roquebrunne, France, between 1926 and 1929,<br />

comprised sumptuous interiors which acted as containers for her luxurious<br />

and highly decorated lacquered artefacts. 12<br />

However hard those <strong>Modern</strong>ists, among others, sought to reject it<br />

in their later careers, so deeply rooted was decoration’s relationship with<br />

‘inside spaces’ that, by the twentieth century, it had become a defining
