L'OLYMPIADE CULTURELLE THE CULTURAL OLYMPIAD
A chacune des villes ayant brigué l'honneur d'accueillir les Jeux de
la XIX Olympiade, le Comité international olympique adressa un ques-
tionnaire où figurait en bonne place la phrase suivante: "Quel pro-
gramme artistique proposez-vous?" Cette question prouvait combien
le CIO avait à coeur de redonner aux Jeux leur signification originale:
une union du sport et de la culture. La réponse immédiate du Mexique
et la façon dont il organisa par la suite les Jeux contribuèrent gran-
dement à la diffusion de cet idéal préconisé par Pierre de Coubertin.
Echelonnée sur un an, l'Olympiade culturelle fut officiellement inau-
gurée le 19 janvier 1968 au Palais des Beaux-Arts, avec la première
représentation du Ballet des Cinq Continents. MM. Gustavo Díaz Ordaz,
président de la République sous le haut patronage duquel étaient placés
les Jeux, Avery Brundage, président du Comité international olympique,
Alfonso Corona del Rosal, maire de Mexico, et Pedro Ramírez Vázquez,
président du Comité organisateur, assistaient à cette cérémonie en
compagnie de plusieurs ambassadeurs, de représentants du gouverne-
ment et de nombreux invités d'honneur.

"What fine arts program do you propose?" The priority given this ques-
tion is indicative of the importance placed by the IOC on restoring the
ancient Olympic ideal—the union of sports and culture—which was in-
corporated into the Olympic statutes by the founder of the modern
Olympic Games, Baron Pierre de Coubertin. Mexico's immediate answer
to the IOC question and, later, its actual response to the challenge of
organizing the Games of the XIX Olympiad, was an overwhelming af-
firmation of this Olympic ideal.
The year-long Cultural Olympiad was formally inaugurated at Mexico
City's Palace of Fine Arts on the evening of January 19, 1968, with
the first performance of the Ballet of the Five Continents. The impor-
tance of the occasion was underscored by the presence of Gustavo
Díaz Ordaz, President of the Republic and Patron of the Games of the
XIX Olympiad; Avery Brundage, President of the International Olympic
Committee; Alfonso Corona del Rosal, Mayor of the Federal District;
Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the
Games of the XIX Olympiad; and a large audience which included
