For the linking-up of the new network with ITRF, the following stations were used: — Hartebeesthoek (HRAO) in South Africa; — Sutherland (SUTH) in South Africa; — Libreville (NKLG) in Gabon; — Ascension II (ASCI) in Ascension; — Malindi (MALI) in Kenya. The Choice of the Reference Stations The linking-up with the ITRF network was done with the help of three reference points. All the independent baseline vectors for these reference points and the participating ITRF stations were selected. These baselines were computed for every twenty-four hours. The accuracy of these baselines (independent of their length) was about 1 cm (1 °). As indicated in figure 8, the three reference stations were chosen in Kinshasa (REF1), Lubumbashi (REF2) and Tshikapa (REF3) (fig. 7). The main reason for proceeding this way was that, since the ITRF stations participate on a voluntary basis, one has no guarantee that the observations will become available later. The thirty-five densification points were only stationed during 2x12 hours. By linking each point to two of the three reference stations (that

The geographical coordinates (cp, X) computed on the GRS80 ellipsoid as well as the ellipsoidal height h and the orthometric height H are given in table 1.
