Abstract<br />

TWO ASPECTS OF MODELS AND CULTURAL ROLE<br />

OF SCIENTIFIC MODEL<br />

In this paper I will look at the two aspects of models which I c<strong>al</strong>l the ‘symbolic’ and the<br />

‘function<strong>al</strong>’. A comparison is made in this regard between models considered as Kuhnian<br />

paradigms, and Durkheim’s theory of soci<strong>al</strong> cohesion through collective representation. I argue<br />

that models serve a similar function with respect to the scientific community. However, this does<br />

not imply that practice is independent of belief. What I suggest instead is that practice is<br />

reconciled or negotiated with belief. Thus practice in a sense, does not tell us the whole story.<br />

Résumé<br />

Dans cet article, j’examinerai deux aspects des modèles : l’aspect ‘symbolique’ et celui<br />

‘fonctionnel’. Une comparaison sera faite par ce biais entre les modèles considérés comme des<br />

paradigmes selon le concept de Kuhn et la théorie de la cohésion soci<strong>al</strong>e par la représentation<br />

collective de Durkheim. Je soutiens que les modèles accomplissent une fonction similaire eu<br />

égard à la communauté scientifique. Or, ceci n’implique pas que la pratique est indépendante de<br />

la croyance. Je suggère plutôt que la pratique est réconciliée et renégociée avec la croyance.<br />

En un sens, la pratique ne nous raconte donc pas toute l’histoire.<br />
