BASINS FOR THE TREATMENT OF
CONTAMINATED WATERS
One of the fundamental features to
be analysed when treatment of contaminated
waters becomes necessary
is to provide their contact with the air
for as long as possible.
The setting up of retaining basins
increases the natural contact of the
effluents with the air and, as a consequence,
it is possible to precipitate
many metals that, in the presence of
oxygen, create insoluble and often
stable compounds.
By associating these basins with
passive or active treatment systems
(even if these should often
On another scale, not just because of
the diverse seasonal flows involved,
but especially due to the contamination
of waters with pH values lower
than 3, the situations recorded in
Lousal and Aljustrel, two mining
areas located in the Iberian Pyrite
Belt, are significant examples of the
already completed actions.
Other interesting situations linked to
the proactive treatment of the waters
arising from the Quinta do Bispo
and Cunha Alta mining areas, show
up the type of ongoing effluent treatment
system in the radioactive mining
areas, especially driven towards
those where, in the past and during
the last stage of production, chemirequire
the incorporation of prior
treatment), it is possible, in a combined
operation, (drainage, aeration
(natural or forced), decanting), to
minimize the impacts resulting from
these contaminated effluents, and
thus renewing the quality of water
for compatible uses, such as agricultural.
Instances such as the lower effluent
of the Jales mine, with flows throughout
the year, and those of Argozelo,
have shown, due to the results
obtained, the reduction of iron,
manganese and arsenic contents to
values in line with the set objectives
and covered by the legislation in
force.
recovery of the ore.
