WHAT CONSTITUTES
GOOD PRACTICE IN
ADDRESSING MINING
LEGACY?
Good practice in any area of policy
or performance is almost never illustrated
completely at a single site.
Rather, it is usual for any model of
good practice to be drawn from a
number of sites and experiences.
The notion that there is a one-sizefits-all
answer is also unhelpful, as
it implies that the diversity of physical,
social, economic, political and
biological factors which interact at
legacy sites is less important than
a single model of what should be
done. It is probably more useful, and
certainly more enduring, to consider
a range of good practice examples
drawn from a range of settings and
types of operations.
Despite this cavea there are several
elements of good practice which are
universally important and even essential
for successful regeneration of
sites and communities after mining.
These can be grouped under the following
headings:
1. Build a wide coalition of interested
parties
2. Establish a comprehensive baseline
of social, environmental and
economic conditions
3. Evaluate and prioritise the opportunities
for improvement
4. Develop an action plan involving a
wide range of collaborations
5. Communicate clearly the rationale
and benefits for the proposed action
plan
6. Put considerable effort into seeking
funding streams from a variety
of sources
7. Learn from and share experience
with others
Looking at each of these elements
in turn:

Almost all the success stories in
post-mining regeneration demonstrate
the value of multi-stakeholder
collaborations. These groups work
together in an environment of increasing
trust and understanding,
