SAFETY ACTIONS
Safety issues associated to medium/
large sized mining operations cause
multiple and diversified impacts that
can be reasonably identified and their
resolution considered within the scope
of the projects developed for the areas
in which they occur.
A different situation is that which
derives, here and there, as a consequence
of prospecting and search
activities, or from small operations
occur in protected habitats that
require cautionary measures for intervention,
leading to safety actions
that justify the development of simple
projects which, without prejudicing
the objectives to be achieved,
provide value and token the context
of the intervention.
The most paradigmatic case in this
type of intervention was carried out
in Montesinho, Natural Park, where
the environmental requirements limited
the possibility of a prior clearing
of brush from the area in order to implement
projects. This led to the listing
of 123 wells and chimneys and 90
galleries within the area of the Park.
New situations were discovered after
the beginning of the undertaking,
when machinery commenced cleardeveloped
through more or less individual
initiatives, in locations of
difficult access, in which wells, galleries
and escarpments are often hidden
amongst dense vegetation that
meanwhile has spontaneously grown
in such locations.
In a forested Country, but also with a
tradition in the exploit of the soil, as
is the case in Portugal, the occurrence
of accidents, some of which mortal,
related with former mining works is
unfortunately not an exception.
Areas with abatements and subsidence,
galleries, mining wells, chimneys
and open excavations, unprotected
vertical escarpments, ruined
buildings and mining facilities are
some of the most common dangers.
It adds that many of these situations
ing. Believing that many others would
place at risk workers and equipment,
a controlled burning of the area was
justified and then accepted that
brought out a further 142 wells and
14 galleries, as compared with the
initial estimates.
Simple actions, such as labelling galleries,
refurbishment of pontoons,
fencing open pits and lesser known
risk areas, and consolidation of
ruins, were shown as very useful until
other more generalized remedial
actions could eventually take place
or be justified. Next we can see representative
images of the situation
and actions.
