JOÃO (conserving heritage) The Aljustrel mining area comprises millenary traces, associated to the exploiting of gold, silver and copper in the so-called gossans, where these metals were found in interesting forms and quantities as a consequence of the supergene enrichment to which the local volcano sediment formations were submitted. Multiple wells and galleries are witnesses to this operation. But it is from the mining activity that was renewed from mid 19th century that plant, tools and buildings are frequently found here, calling for intervening preservation actions within the scope of the ongoing Environmental Recovery. The concessionaires of the Aljustrel mines in this period, such as the Transtagana Mining Company endeavoured to improve the ore. One of the more representative traces of this stage is the Transtagana Stack, where pyrite roasting was carried out, which, in a state of accelerated ruin at the start of the current century, was fully rehabilitated and is now a symbol of the mining activity in Aljustrel. Other recovered traces are those of the Pedras Brancas Metallurgical Complex, built by that company at the end of the 19th century, where pyrite roasting was carries out in the open, in smelters, followed by the deposit of the roasted ore in bleaching vats, this operation followed by the cementation stage with deposit/concentration of copper under water, with the introduction of scrap iron in the process. The smelters and the cementing vats in Pedras Brancas were also recovered within the scope of the ongoing projects, as well as those in the Algares area, where, recovery of copper with the cementation process was also carried out from the end of the 19th century onwards. But the whole of the Aljustrel mining area became, similarly to that of São Domingos, an area whose expression and characteristics should be recorded for future generations. The ongoing environmental recovery projects in this mining area endeavour showing and propitiating contact with this heritage, linking the solutions with those that minimize the impacts that some of it still raises these days, such as those associated with the operating residues that indelibly mark all the territory associated with the Aljustrel mining landscape.
