S. DOMINGOS (conservação do património)
A área mineira de São Domingos corresponde, inequivocamente, a um ecossistema associado a um património e a uma paisagem industrial, à luz
dos conceitos que começaram a vigorar nas sociedades industrializadas a partir de meados do século XX.
De facto, estendendo-se por cerca de 393ha, em consequência de uma actividade que, na sua fase mais recente e representativa se desenvolveu
entre 1858 e 1965, é possível nela verificar múltiplos testemunhos, alguns deles em ruína, de enorme representatividade e que importará, pelo menos
alguns, ver mantidos, recuperados ou reabilitados.
Com este objectivo foram desenvolvidos projectos para que no futuro possam ser ponderados e concretizados, por quem tenha a seu cargo a musealização
ou a revitalização de toda esta extensa área mineira.
A Central de Britagem de Moitinha, o conjunto da fábrica da Achada do Gamo, os edifícios dos antigos Refeitórios dos Mineiros, as Oficinas Gerais,
a Ponte da Corta, o Cais da Descarga, a Central Eléctrica, a Casa da Balança da Central de lixiviação, são alguns dos edificados que mereceram
reflexão por via do desenvolvimento de projectos de execução com vista à sua futura reabilitação.
Entretanto, para além da valorização produzida em torno da Corta principal da mina, foi possível transformar, no Pomarão, porto fluvial de embarque
do minério da mina dela distando cerca de 7km, o antigo Terminal Ferroviário aí existente, a Centro Interpretativo que, para o efeito, passou para
a gestão da Câmara Municipal de Mértola.
Por iniciativa dos antigos concessionários da mina, La Sabina, a Casa da Administração foi também, adaptada a Unidade Hoteleira de elevado nível,
que tem suscitado o apreço dos que a visitam.

The São Domingos mining area is undoubtedly
an ecosystem associated
to heritage and to an industrial landscape,
in line with the concepts that
came into force in the industrialized
societies from mid 20th century.
In effect, these areas occupy approximately
393ha, as a consequence
of an activity that, in its most recent
and representative stage developed
between 1858 and 1965, and where
it is possible to view many traces of
it, some of which in ruins and ex-
tremely typical and some of which
would be important to maintain,
recover or rehabilitate.
Projects were developed with this
objective, to be considered and materialized
in the future, by whoever is in
charge of the museology or the revitalization
of this extensive mining area.
The Moitinha Crushing Plant, the
Achada do Gamo industrial facilities,
the buildings of the former Miner’s
Canteen, the General Workshops,
the “Black” Bridge, the Unloading
Quay, the Power Plant, the Weighbridge
of the Bleaching Plant, are
some of the buildings that deserved
reflection for the purpose of developing
projects to undertake their
future rehabilitation.
Meanwhile, in addition to the value
produced around the mine’s main
Pithead, it was possible to convert
the former Railway Terminal, in Pomarão,
a river port where the ore
was loaded, and approximately 7km
away, into an Interpretative Centre
whose management was transferred
to Mértola County Council.
The former concessionaires of the
mine, the La Sabina Company, took
the initiative of converting the buildings
where its management was
housed into a Luxury Hotel which has
been much relished by its visitors.
