MODELAÇÃO E SELAGEM DE ESCOMBREIRAS E BACIAS DE REJEITADOS

A concessão foi inicialmente atribuída em 1929 para a exploração do Couto Mineiro de Jales. Em 1933 os trabalhos transferiram-se para o filão do
Campo inserido no maciço granítico local. Esse filão continha quartzo, arsenopirite, pirite, galena, blenda, sulfossais de prata e ouro nativo, tendo
sido este o principal elemento objecto de aproveitamento.
A exploração que se estendeu até 1992, deu origem a uma escombreira de material proveniente das rochas encaixantes da mineralização e do
material rejeitado pelo processo de concentração por flutuação, com cerca de 1.100.000m 3
O calibre muito fino deste último material e o entupimento dos sistemas de drenagem da água sobrenadante através do fundo da barragem de
rejeitados, conduziu à rotura da mesma e à dispersão pela envolvente de um grande volume de materiais arrastados pelas águas de processo e pelas
águas das chuvas para a Ribeira de Inverniços, a que se associou o fenómeno da dispersão pelo vento que, em determinadas épocas do ano, incide
fortemente no peneplanalto transmontano.
A intervenção levada a cabo em aproximadamente 11 hectares, correspondeu à primeira obra desenvolvida no âmbito do programa de recuperação
de áreas mineiras degradadas em Portugal, tendo registado as seguintes fases:
• Demolições e limpezas de antigas instalações em ruínas;
• Reperfilamento com modelação da configuração das escombreiras;
• Selagem e impermeabilização dos depósitos confinados;
• Reorientação da drenagem natural das zonas envolventes, pela implementação de sistema de drenagem superficial periférico;
• Implantação de sistema de drenagem superficial e sub- superficial;
• Implantação de sistema de drenagem subterrâneo;
• Realização de tratamento paisagístico do local;
• Instalação de vedação e sinalização adequada.
Após concluída a obra no prazo de 12 meses, contando com 2 meses de interrupção devido às condições climatéricas, a sua integração na envolvente
veio a revelar-se completamente adequada. Ver fotos descritivas das situações e intervenções.

A concession was more recently
initially awarded in 1929 and the
operation commenced in the Jales
Mining Reserve. In 1933 work was
transferred to the Field lode included
in the local granite massif. This lode
contained in addition to quartz, arsenical
pyrite, pyrite, galena, silver
sulphide salts and native gold.
The operation, which was carried on
until 1992, created a waste dump
with materials from the encasing
rocks of the mining operation and
from materials rejected from the
process of concentration by flotation,
with a volume of approximately
1,100,000m 3 .
The fine grain size of this latter material
and the choking of the drainage
systems of the supernatant waters
through the bottom of the dam
led to its rupture and to the dispersion
in the surroundings of a large
volume of materials dragged by the
processing waters and by rain waters
to the Inverniços Stream, associated
to the dispersal phenomenon
caused by the wind that, in certain
times of the year, blows with gale
force in the headlands of Trás-os-
Montes province.
The intervention carried out in approximately
11 hectares, was the
first undertaking developed within
the scope of the recovery programme
of the degraded mining areas
in Portugal, with the following
stages recorded:
• Demolition and cleansing of the
ancient ruined facilities;
• Re-profiling with containment of
the layout of the waste dumps;
• Sealing and waterproofing of
the confined deposits;
• Provision of new routes for the
natural drainage of the surrounding
areas, through implementing
the peripheral surface
drainage system;
• Commissioning of the surface
and sub-surface drainage system;
• Commissioning of the underground
drainage system;
• Location landscaping;
• Installation of adequate fencing
and signalling.
After the undertaking was completed
within 12 months, which included a
2 month interruption due to climatic
conditions, its inclusion in the surroundings
was shown to be totally
adequate. See the photographs showing
