Em todas as intervenções da zona Centro-Norte do país, onde as condições climatéricas são propícias ao desenvolvimento de espécies arbustivas e
arbóreas, procurou-se tirar partido da situação, modelando solos e escombreiras, de modo a garantir a sua rápida integração no meio.
Covas, área mineira de tungsténio, após ter sido abandonada em 1984, constituiu-se num foco de contaminação do rio Coura, por via do arrastamento
dos materiais residuais da antiga exploração depositados nas escombreiras e da percolação/lixiviação das águas pluviais em contacto com estes.
A intervenção efectuada de modelação, selagem e coberto vegetal das escombreiras, a par da criação de um parque de merendas junto ao lugar de
Vilares, permite que as respectivas povoações usufruam desta infra-estrutura, tão do gosto e hábito da região.

In all the intervening actions in the
Centre-North zone of the country,
where the climatic conditions are
propitious for the development of
shrub and forestry species, it was endeavoured
to take advantage of the
situation, preparing soils and waste
dumps, in order to guarantee their
swift integration in the environment.
In Covas, a tungsten mining area
that, after being abandoned in 1984
became a source of contamination of
the River Coura, due to the dragging
of the residual materials of the for-
mer operation deposited in the waste
dumps, and to the percolation and/or
bleaching of the rain water in contact
with these.
The intervening action carried out
in containment, sealing and top soil
and vegetation covering of the waste
dumps, coupled with the creation of
a picnic park next door to Vilares
village, would allow the residents to
enjoy this infrastructure, so much to
the taste of this region’s people.
