SOILS AND SEDIMENTS
The aim of the qualification of soils
is not just to consider the possibility
of their use as well as determining
in what measure they contribute
towards atmospheric or hydro contamination.
The rigorous and representative
choice of the locations where the
samples are collected is a crucial
feature. This choice must take into
account, in each mining area, not
just the zones where the residues
of the mining process were accumulated,
be these waste dumps of minerals
with valuable content below
the cut-off grade, materials originating
from the rocks encasing the ore,
tailings ponds (after concentration
processes including leaching), or deposits
of decanting sludge (resulting
from the treatment of effluents), but
also the sediments of the water lines
and the surrounding soils.
The soil qualification samples to
be obtained must allow determining
the geochemical parameters
required to identify anomalies and
contamination situations. In the
former radioactive minerals mining
areas it is especially necessary to determine
the existing radioisotopes.
Although the number of components
that may be determined in a
qualification process may be very
high with reference to our country’s
mining areas, the determining and
significant parameters are those
shown in Table II, where the content
in As, Sb, Pb, Cr, Ni, Mn, Cu, Zn,
Ag, S, U, 238 U, 226 Ra, 210 Pb is singled
out for the generality of situations
and the isotopic ratios 226 Ra/ 238 U e
210
Pb/ 226 Ra, as well as the determining
of total uranium, in the specific
case of radioactive minerals, is singled
out.
Soil contamination also occurs in
areas adjacent to the mining areas
and may be a potential focus for the
generation of contamination of the
environment.
As a general principle it may be asserted
that the waste dumps that
contain finer grain materials and
with a greater content of metallic
components or radioactive materials,
produce greater and more
intense impacts, although coarser
grain materials may exert their influence
for a longer time.
